Step into the Light album for sale Leo Young's debut was a mixed bag of good, solid house beats and piano-heavy jazz. On the one hand, there was something appealing about the way Young would avoid many of the usual traps of mental dance music. "New Flamenco Immortal Conscience," for example, squirmed around its own wailing art melodies and crisp funk with undeniable accuracy and "Pyramid (The Afro Temple)" gave the unreceptive qualities of electronic jazz a minor face-lift. On the other hand, too much of Cosmic Land occupied its own head space, constantly keeping the listener at bay with unnecessarily cheesy keyboard sounds and an off-putting fondness for over-style. ~ Dean Carlson

Step into the Light album for sale On their self-titled fourth album, Dressy Bessy ditch their trademark twee preciousness for a harder, crunchier approach. That they come out sounding remarkably like the Breeders circa LAST SPLASH has to do mostly with the raspy edge in singer Tammy Ealom's voice and their three-chord songwriting approach. Ealom's lyrics on such cuts as "This May Hurt (A Little)" and "Girl, You Shout!," which delves into a mother-daughter relationship, are detailed and clever, and there's an invigorating rush in the album's quick pacing. Recorded at Station Sound, Queens, New York.
