Eric Johnson & Alien Love Child: Eric Johnson (vocals, guitar, piano); Malford Milligan (vocals); Steve Barber (Hammond B-3 organ); Chris Maresh (keyboards, bass, background vocals); Bill Maddox (drums, percussion, samples).
"Rain" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Recorded during a three-date stand at Austin institution Antone's blues club, LIVE AND BEYOND finds Eric Johnson playing with a much warmer tone than the more sterile work that's plagued some of his '90s studio work. Accompanied by bassist Chris Maresh and drummer Bill Marsh, the Texas-born guitar virtuoso flexes his considerable talents on instrumentals that contain ethereal phrasing and high-flying fretwork within a few bars of each other ("Zenland"), chugging blues-rock ("Enzo Shuffle"), and a slightly jazz-inflected workout ("Rain").
Storyville frontman Milford Milligan guests, in the process adding some grit to the proceedings via a sizzling cover of Jimmie Vaughan's "Don't Cha Know" and the slow-burning blues original "Once A Part Of Me". EJ pays further homage to his roots with "The Boogie King," a tribute to John Lee Hooker that goes from a modest shuffle to a sizzling tour-de-force. Wrapping up this impressive in-concert outing is "World Of Trouble," a studio cut that finds Eric Johnson setting aside guitar histrionics for some soulful blues playing.
Principally recorded live in Texas, January 2000.

reunited with Electromagnets (Johnson's 1st release that smells of Mahavishnu in 1975 available on Rhino CD) drummer Bill Maddox, Stephen Barber on keys (on 1 studio track), and the new phenom Chris Maresh on Bass.
Recorded almostly live in Texas January 2000, the recording is clear, precise, and showcases Johnson at his finest in the whole range of his expertise.
It's a return to the freshness of Tones, only live.
Worth the price in gold for Eric and the fans.

Dissapointing Although a live record from this guitar god may seem exciting, this cd is a dissapointment and is nothing like Eric in "G3: Live in Concert". It definetely falls short of his typical high standards for his cds. Most of the songs are cliched blues, too short in length and just not as interesting as the exquisite songs he's composed in the past. If you are just getting into Eric Johnson, buy his studio records first like "Venus Isle" (his best IMO).
For better live songs from Eric, checkout his performances on "G3: Live in Concert". Submitted by a reviewer (Toronto, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great live album! Eric Johnson has done great with this album. You can hear his influences such as Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, and more in his playing. I gave 4 stars because the vocals aren't that great. Submitted by bjgatten (Ridgefield, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Live And Beyond CD music
$22.99 At the end of John Coltrane's two-year contract with Atlantic Records in 1961, the saxophonist became one of the first major figures to sign up with ABC-Paramount's new label, Impulse! Six years later, he died, leaving behind an immense legacy of music. There is a sense of adventure, expectation and delight to Coltrane's Impulse! recordings--a sustained burst of creativity which constitutes his greatest achievements.
The soulful folk songs--past, present and future--which make up THE COMPLETE AFRICA/BRASS SESSIONS are a celebration of freedom: the freedom to create on a higher plane, the freedom he felt in playing with his new quartet. In a sense, THE COMPLETE AFRICA/BRASS SESSIONS are a celebration of McCoy Tyner's contribution to the group. Tyner's distinctive block voicings, and his method of modulating in fourths were a major part of the quartet's sound. Reed innovator Eric Dolphy (who joined Coltrane's Quartet later in 1961) took melodic ideas and chords from Coltrane ...
