4 stars Another Great LIVE release...
'Detours.' It's such a great pun. 'Detours,' of course punning The Tours... and SAGA have performed their fair share of them. If you can't make it to a SAGA show, this LIVE compilation will give you an idea of what you're missing... even though nothing can take the place of you BEING THERE taking it all in yourself, with standout tracks like "Wind Him Up", "On The Loose", "The Flyer" and "You're Not Alone" reminding you of just how great this band is... both in the studio and in the arena. It's interesting that the band has chosen to include pieces like "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" and "William's Walkabout" as it gives an added demension to the listening experience... and am I the only one that appreciates the fact that 'Generation 13' was represented by the inclusion of "The Cross?" All in all, I very much look forward to every new studio release... but it's also nice to sit back from time to time, slip in a new LIVE compilation like this one and transport yourself away. I sure wish I was at these shows, but having them to listen to is alright by me in stead.

It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided to continue with a new vocalist and keyboardist. It was even more surprising when the new members turned out to be Trevor Horn (later a famed pop producer) and Geoff Downes (who would soon depart with Steve Howe for Asia). And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA turned out to be a great one. While Horn's voice is in the same general range as Anderson's, he tends to blend more with the vocals of Howe and Squire for a distinctive three-part harmony sound. Similarly, the individual instrumental statements of Howe and Downes avoid grandstanding in favor of the group dynamic. Cray's second effort hews to the same musical template as TOO MANY COOKS, his under-appreciated debut. That is to say that BAD INFLUENCE is hardly the work of a blues puritan. There's just as much Memphis-style R&B and soul as blues in the mix, making for a potent fusion. Cray's guitar work is more impressive than ever, particularly on "No Big Deal," where he rips jagged metallic lines out of his Stratocaster as if he were channeling Otis Rush.
