From its bizarre cover art to its absurd title to its gleefully chaotic and thematically offensive songs, the Butthole Surfers' 1985 full-length debut, PSYCHIC...POWERLESS...ANOTHER MAN'S SAC, perfectly exemplifies the Texas-spawned ensemble's twisted, ungodly aesthetic. On this wildly unhinged first outing, frontman Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary lead listeners on a surreal exploration of rock's sub-basement, occasionally surfacing in a nightmarish brothel (the sinisterly obscene "Concubine" and the humorously vulgar "Lady Sniff"), a seedy punk/rockabilly club (the Dead Kennedys-esque "Butthole Surfer" and the revved-up "Mexican Caravan") and other strange locales. Throughout this amazingly odd journey, Haynes caterwauls and croons through layers of electronic vocal distortions, and Leary responds in kind with skittering and squealing guitar lines that careen over frequently pummeling, near-tribal rhythms. Though many fans swear by REMBRANDT PUSSYHORSE or LOCUST ABORTION TECHNICIAN as the group's finest record, those who appreciate these Lone Star misfits in their most unrefined state will usually site PSYCHIC as their favorite Butthole Surfers concoction.

Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac
$9.09 After Pioughd's semi-misfire and Rough Trade's subsequent collapse, the Surfers were in a surprising position. Not only were they courted and signed to Capitol thanks to the Nirvana-led alternative explosion, they also got high-profile arranger and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones to produce the new album. When Saloon surfaced in early 1993, some accused the band of basically cloning Haynes' memorable collaboration with ...

Everything seems to start almost normally on Pussyhorse with "Creep in the Cellar," even with the rather gone violin line -- Haynes is intelligible, the piano part is quiet serene. Then again, Haynes is talking about the creep in question doing things ...

$12.95 Die-hard Butthole Surfers fans are often compelled to own every rare recording that they can dig up, and this disc is one that they will be foaming at the mouth over. Humpty Dumpty L.S.D. is an odd assortment of tracks that span the career of these psychedelic nightmare-weavers, from their early days of cockroaches and megaphones to their more refined and radio-friendly period. A number of songs were initially released on a variety of hard-to-find compilations, such as "Eindhoven Chicken Mask," which appeared on Touch & Go's God's Favorite Dog compilation, as well ...

Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac
$12.55 Landslide top vote-getter at the Falcon Ridge (NY) Folk Festival’s “Most-Wanted” competition and NAIRD “Indie” nominee (singer-songwriter album of the year for “Digging Through My Closet”) DAVID ROTH strikes many chords, hearts, and minds with his unique songs, offbeat observations, moving stories, and powerful singing and subject matter. Since emerging from another nationwide field of several hundred songwriters to open the Kerrville (TX) Folk Festival as it’s New Folk Winner, the Chicago native (and two-time national anthem singer for the NBA’s Michael Jordan-era Bulls) has garnered accolades for his performances, workshops, writing, and recordings. Featured on many of Christine Lavin’s Rounder compilations, the former artist-in-residence at New York’s Omega Institute has also been a songwriting judge at Kerrville, Napa Valley (CA), Tumbleweed (WA), Eventide Arts (MA), and the South Florida Folk Festival. In addition to singing “Earth” at the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations, David’s “Rising in Love” was performed at the 100th Anniversary of Carnegie Hall in 1991, and “Manuel Garcia” and “Nine Gold Medals” both appear in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. Noel Paul Stookey (of Peter, Paul & Mary) has performed David’s “Spacesuits” on PPM tours and produced “If You Can’t Fly” (written by David and Chuck Pyle) for his 2002 children’s album “World Around Song”. The BOSE Corporation includes “Taller Than My Hair” and “Five Blind Men” on their “best of new folk” compilations. David’s recorded 7 CDs on the Wind River label (with an 8th and 9th in Germany on Stockfisch Records) and has been living on Cape Cod since 2000 after 8 years in Seattle. www.davidrothmusic.com“David is a true master of his trade, and a stunning example of folk music at its best.”Beth MurrayIvy Chord Coffeehouse, Reading, MA"I love your albums...though there are some times I can't find two and two, much less put them together, I'm trying to do both here by congratulating you on some fine writing..."Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul & Mary)“...one of the best songs I’ve heard in the last 20 years”Tom Paxton on David’s “Nine Gold Medals”"I don't think we've ever had a more enthusiastic audience."Ben ...

Psychic...Powerless...Another Man's Sac
$12.35 Lyrics and liner notes translated from the Portuguese by Wendy Bazilian.
One of the embodiments of Brazil's crash into the counter-culture of the '60s, Mutantes (Mutants) weren't just a great pop-rock group, they were boundary-smashing revolutionaries. As part of that country's late-'60s Tropicalismo movement, the trio helped modernize distinctly Brazilian sounds, scuzzying the samba rhythms of Carnaval with fuzzed-up electric guitars, ...
