Tunnels With Percy Jones album
$12.65 Brand X electric bass guitar icon Percy Jones is the biggest name in this colorful quartet, but the least obvious leader. More upfront guitarist Van Manakas with midi vibist Marc Wagnon and drummer Frank Katz comprise Tunnels. There's no synthesizer player credited, so it's evident that either Manakas or more likely Wagnon is triggering various hued electronic washings. The music is definitly early fusion oriented and cleverly conceived for a post-'70s Y2K era. Tunnels depend on funk rhythms for the most part: cool on the title track, the same under serene and interactive multi-melodic musings from the frontmen and Jones on "Quai des Brumes," easy and rockier with choppy vibes and spacy, snarly guitar in the context of "Land of the Hazmats," or heavier and dramatic with way-out to plunky synth incursions and oohing vocals from Sarah Pillow during "House of Marc." They use a hard-edged 5/4 start-stop line with the lead heavy, juggernaut signature sound ...

Tunnels With Percy Jones CD music
$18.09 Recorded live in Chicago, Illinois on November 16, 1977 and live in New York, New York on June 21, 1993.
The two-disc set TIMELINE juxtaposes two entirely different editions of Brand X, one of Britain's most underrated jazz-rock bands. The first disc captures the group as a quintet, live in Chicago in 1977. The second finds them as a trio, yet no less potent, live in New York 16 years later in 1993. The listener is presented with not just two live recordings from disparate eras of the band, but with evidence of the vast evolution the group underwent throughout its extended life span.
The 1977 performance finds the group audacious on works like the adventurous ...

Tunnels With Percy Jones music CDs
$14.29 Led by former Brand X fretless bassist Percy Jones, this maddeningly creative, wild, and sometimes experimental trio makes no bones about its desire to carry on in the hardcore jazz fusion traditions of the risk-taking era of Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Tony Williams. They're very good natured about the sacrifice of possible commerce for art's sake. In their liner notes, they actually say something about the recording containing tonal nastiness, dissonance, harmonic and rhythmic abstraction, distortion, and "other forms of sonic weirdness." They warn people under the influence of smooth jazz ...

Tunnels With Percy Jones songs
$5.99 With THE YES ALBUM, Yes began an important new chapter in its career and defined much of what the next decade would bring. They had left behind not only their original guitarist, Peter Banks, but also the covers of 1960s tunes by the likes of the Byrds and the Beatles. The arrival of the more hard-edged Steve Howe signaled the group's ascent into full-blown progressive-rock mode, a style whose parameters Yes helped craft with ...

Tunnels With Percy Jones music CDs
$14.95 Keyboardist/composer Wayne Horvitz has performed many different kinds of music in many different contexts. Rock 'n' roll-tinged avant-blowout with John Zorn's Naked City; neo-noir soundtracks for movies that haven't been made yet with his The President band; funky-groove jazz with his Zony Mash quartet; Americana-roots music with wife Robin Holcomb, and more. From the earthy to the cutting-edge, he's played it all.
On FOREVER, he gets back to his acoustic piano roots with a fairly straight-ahead jazz album, backed by guitar, bass and drums. The ambiance of Horvitz's moody tunes and production recalls the early ECM albums of Gary Burton and John Abercrombie. The ominously-titled but infectiously lyrical "Prepaid Funeral" channels the spirits of Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi with its genial, genteel swing. The sly, sultry Mediterranean-tinged "Capricious Midnight" recalls film composer Henry Mancini's music for the "Pink Panther" movies. Each track is rich with evocative melodies and supremely accomplished yet subdued playing--you never get the feeling anyone here is trying to "dazzle" the listener with "hot" soloing for its own sake.
