Red Planet shows it can really rock on the group's first full-length, Revolution 33, which was released by Gearhead Records in 2000, but the bandmembers don't always choose to hit it that hard. Sometimes they skip along on a trippy mid-tempo wash of electronic effects and hazy vocals instead. But even the lighter numbers weave spacy moog melodies through a heavy grind of distorted rock guitar, for a poppy sound with a tough edge that recalls Cheap Trick and the Cars. Jeremy Powers' attitude-rich vocals range from a playful sashay to the lazy surfer's drawl of the band's native California, as he sings about girls and music with self-disparaging humor, as in, "Sensual girl, I'm not ready for you," on "Sensual Girl." The numbers that shine are those that rock hardest, like "Satellite Radio," propelled by the rhythm section's pounding momentum, topped with a buzz saw of guitar that wails into a solo with the ferocity of '80s shredders. "Dean Taylor" has a jaded Lou Reed vocal delivery, alternated with a glam singsong and funky guitar solo. Mid-tempo numbers sometimes lose momentum under waves of atmospheric keyboards and effects, but even less distinct songs are spiced up with an international assortment of influences, including blues harmonica on "Drop the Bomb" and a sitar jam on "Be My Yoko." This album is a poppy introduction to the band's later, more sophisticatedly melodic rock & roll, and a good bet for fans of rock that is more dreamy than driven. ~ Sarah Tomlinson

Revolution 33 album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance ...

Revolution 33 CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should ...

Revolution 33 songs
$11.59 Penelope Houston And Her Band: Penelope Houston (vocals, melodica, autoharp); Eliot Nemzer (guitar); Mel Peppas (mandolin, guitar, background vocals); Steven Strauss (bass, background vocals); Kevin Mummey (drums, percussion).
Most old-school punk purists will never forgive Penelope Houston for giving up guitar-driven rock & roll for acoustic music (even if she did so several years before the "unplugged" phenomenon made such things fashionable). But anyone who has actually listened to The Whole World will notice that Houston's acoustic music is just as smart, feisty, and uncompromising as her work with the Avengers (it's not hard to imagine her old band cranking up "Glad I'm a Girl" or "On Borrowed Time"). And if her lyrics are less stridently political, they're also more intelligent and mature without sacrificing her opinions in the process (even her love songs reflect a refreshing warts-and-all realism). And while Penelope the Punk Goddess had a habit of wandering off-pitch with annoying frequency, Penelope the Singer/Songwriter is able to convey much of the same intensity with a lot more nuance and accuracy, and her band (anchored by Houston's husband and collaborator, Mel Peppas) makes up in resonance what they lack in volume. The Whole World is a strong and compelling album from a remarkably underrated artist; it's well worth a listen should it cross your path. ~ Mark Deming
"The 13 bittersweet accounts of love and miscommunication that comprise Houston's The Whole World radiate a hard-headed generosity of spirit that says as much about the artist's inner toughness as any rock band could. With her understatedly gorgeous melodies getting sensitive support from her acoustic combo, songs like "Qualities of Mercy," "Honeysuckle" and "Father's Day" illuminate complex emotional issues with understated eloquence." - Pulse Magazine. The Bio:Punk Folkie PopstarPenelope Houston has been called alot of things. In the New York Trouser Press Record Guide, Ira Robbins proclaimed her, at 19, as "...the archetypal indomitable rock'n'roll woman -- her strength and aggression are what elevates these tracks from energetic but typical punk to remarkable personal statements... the Avengers (her first band) were a major national asset." In The Unknown Legends Of Rock And Roll, she's marked ...
