This is Blue Highway's first album for the Ceili label and it's an auspicious piece of work. The group members are all reaching the peak of their musical powers, both in terms of their instrumental prowess and their vocal skill. Factor in the strong songwriting of Shawn Lane and Tim Stafford and it all adds up to one of the most polished acts in bluegrass. The album features not only fiery instrumental work, as in "Lonesome Hearted Blues," but also a wonderful a cappella, rhythmic gospel number, "I Am Near the Gate" (written by Lane), a couple of tunes that approximate country music rather well ("Lonely Old Town" and "That Could Be You"), an evocative folklike version of Stafford's "Clay and Ottie," and the Western-flavored bluegrass sound of "I Hung My Head," a song written by Sting. Dobro player Rob Ickes is the primary IBMA award winner in this group but, as this self-titled release indicates, Blue Highway is a versatile and creative outfit. This album clearly ups the ante, but there's reason to believe that Blue Highway will achieve results at this level for some time to come. ~ Philip Van Vleck

| | Blue Highway Wind To The West CD (1996)
Blue Highway CD music
$13.19 Contemporary bluegrass at its best, this album contains masterful playing, inspired singing, and memorable songwriting. Blue Highway turn in an affecting vocal and instrumental performance on guitarist Tim Stafford's haunting "The Rounder," as well as ripping through a cover of Merle Haggard's "Huntsville" and showcasing their gospel side on a soul-stirring arrangement of the traditional "God Moves in a Windstorm." Shawn Lane's lonesome tenor is pleasing, as are the harmony blends and the lead vocals of the rest of the band. Ace Dobro player Rob Ickes -- voted 1996 Dobro Player of the Year by ...

| | Ralph Stanley Back To The Cross CD (1992)
Blue Highway songs
$12.59 Like Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley maintained his skills and spirit into the 1990s, still singing and picking classic bluegrass. He joined Freeland in 1992, and appropriately made his label debut a gospel session with the Clinch Mountain Boys. You wouldn't expect any surprises, and there weren't any; nor were there low points. The CD contained 12 wonderful renditions of traditional hymns and praise songs performed with the humility, grace and down-home artistry that has always characterized Ralph Stanley's music. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Blue Highway Wondrous Love CD (2003)
Blue Highway album
$14.65 Contemporary bluegrass supergroup Blue Highway's gospel album Wondrous Love shines brightly with reverent harmonies and hard-earned precision. Expertly recorded and produced, each voice gets equal space and every instrument's strum is clean and warm, intimate and clear. Peppering their repertoire with a handful of a cappella spirituals, the band not only demonstrates their ability to harmonize like a choir, but when the music kicks back in after these vocals-only tracks it reminds the listener of Blue Highway's strong pickin' ability as well. Pure and honest, reverent and welcoming, bright and rollicking, clear and convicted, Blue Highway have continued their winning streak of terrific albums by picking a theme close to their hearts and making it available to everyone who will listen. Far beyond being just one of the best bluegrass-gospel albums of the year, Wondrous Love could easily stand on critics' lists as one of the best albums of the year. ~ Zac Johnson

| | Paul Simon's Concert In The Park CDs (1991)
Blue Highway CD music
$21.29 Recorded live in Central Park, New York, New York August 15, 1991.
Simon's 1991 free concert in New York's Central Park was something of a homecoming for the Queens-born singer-songwriter. Several years earlier, his Central Park concert with erstwhile partner Art Garfunkel made the news not just in New York, but all over the world, quickly turning into the stuff of legend. By the '90s, Simon had become a cross-cultural pop pioneer, via the South African sounds of GRACELAND and the Brazilian rhythms of RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS. Along the way, he proved that his musical legacy was a continually unfolding one, with no end yet in sight.
Captured here for posterity, the CONCERT IN THE PARK is essentially a tour through the various phases of his career, from the folkie beginnings of "Sounds Of Silence" through '70s pop hits like "Kodachrome" and his more daring later work. Simon is accompanied by an astounding band that brings together New York studio vets, South African musicians and a Brazilian percussion group, and the result is an elegant, panoramic, cross-cultural sound. Simon's older material is reinterpreted and ...
| | New York Renaissance Band Illusion CD (1971) (Import) Germany
Blue Highway music CDs
$17.45 This is a reissue of New York Renaissance Band's second album ILLUSION.
Renaissance's last official studio album before the band called it quits. It embarks further on the new wave theme the band had been building through "A Song for All Seasons" and "Azure d'Or" and had really brought into full bloom when they switched labels to IRS and released "Camera Camera" two years earlier. It's the same kind of new wave-prog hybrid as "Camera Camera," with anachronistic -- but irresistible -- little numbers like "Richard the IX." The majority of the record is written by Jon Camp and it has his signature pop savvy. "Flight," "Auto-Tech," and "Orient Express" are solid new wave contenders. An enjoyably peppy record. And a tragically short demise to a singularly unique band. (Renaissance would reunite over 15 years later.) ~ Tomas Mureika
The second Renaissance album is the least-known in the group's entire output, having originally failed to get released anywhere except Germany. Although it is a much less bold, more smoothly commercial album, Illusion was also the work of at least three distinctly different lineups representing the group, Jim McCarty dropping out from playing after an illness, and Keith Relf and Louis Cennamo exiting the performing lineup soon after, while Jane Relf played some gigs with John Hawken acting as leader of a new ensemble. It was around this time that the words of lyricist Betty Thatcher started turning up in the group's work and on this album, and guitarist Michael Dunford started writing as well. The results here aren't quite as hard rocking as the previous album -- acoustic guitars supplant electric and Jane Relf's vocals are hooked around a mix of art rock and art pop melodies, without any trace of the psychedelic or freakbeat echoes of the previous album's work. One song, "Mr. Pine," contains an instrumental bridge that Dunford later folded into "Running Hard" in a more developed guise. The lighter textures anticipate the sound of the later lineup of the group, while some of the pop-oriented material harkens back to what ...

| | Brian Franklin Desert Farmer CD (2005)
Blue Highway music CDs
$11.39 From his earliest recordings to his latest album, Desert Farmer, Brian Franklin's songs have studied different types of internal and external struggles: from war and greed, to relationships and identity. While most of them offer a hopeful resolution, they're not happy songs. Not even close. In August of 2005, Franklin was approached by his old friend and collaborator, Rat Bastard, to record in his newly-updated studio in Miami Beach. Though Franklin has written (if not recorded) over 70 songs, he had a particular set in mind - written as a backdrop to the build-up and engagement of America's current wars. Desert Farmer's nine songs loosely trace the plight of non-combatants both here and abroad and features artists such as Diane Ward, Matthew Sabatella, Jack Shawde, Russ Rogers, Bastard, Ken Franklin, and names familiar to South Florida audiences: Arlan Feiles, Emily Easterly, Dean Fields, and Alex DiazWhile political themes and war allusions have long been part of Franklin's songwriting - Desert Farmer is a more focused and conceptual effort. The album takes the listener on a dark path that starts only slightly more optimistic than it ends; even the most hopeful line, "In my dreams... the streets are clean, and we all stand together," is stated doubtfully. The final song, with lyrics by Franklin and melody by Fields, has the protagonist helpless to do anything but comfort a soldier's widow. The album also features "Bullet Butterfly" - Franklin's first songwriting collaboration with Fields. Inspired by the news of the past four years, Franklin hopes the album will call more attention to civilians whose lives have been shattered by conflicts beyond their control. Now 32 years old, and with 8 years passed since his last official release, Franklin is more focused and driven than ever before. With Desert Farmer a relevant and timely outcry against violence, Franklin is looking forward to promoting the release internationally.PRESS Quotes regarding prior releases:THE NEXT FLASH: "Franklin steps into the singer/songwriter spotlight with such blinding clarity it's hard to imagine him doing anything else but this. Franklin's songs are a pure joy to listen to... his somewhat raspy voice a soothing, hypnotic instrument in itself."FT. LAUDERDALE SUN SENTINEL: "Brian Franklin didn't reinvent the wheel. He writes pop songs and delivers them with conviction. We get so caught up in looking for the "next big thing" that good songwriting gets overlooked. Brian Franklin is a great songwriter getting better."MIAMI NEW TIMES: Best Acoustic Performer, "Quite the singer songwriter in his own right, the proof of which now can be heard on Suburban Hallucinations...
