Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's follow-up to their acclaimed 1998 debut, Tanglewood Tree is a truly potent mix of outstanding country harmonies, exemplary musicianship, and complex narratives. The compositions here provide ample evidence of Carter's much deserved reputation in folk circles as one of the most talented singer/songwriters, as he colors an amazingly rich rural landscape, mixing elements of Native American mysticism with tales of the paradoxes of love and the musings of people in transition, always treating his characters with an honest, understated dignity. Featuring a much fuller sound than their previous record When I Go, Carter and Grammer employ session men and the use of a professional studio for the first time, with the results being a texturally rich collaboration that perfectly showcase Carter's pleasant finger-picking guitar style, as well as his banjo and Hammond organ flourishes. Tracy Grammer plays a larger role than on previous releases, as she sings lead on four tracks in addition to adding beautiful violin and mandolin accompaniment. The sunny, gently rolling "Happytown (All Right With Me)" is one of the more unabashedly melodic pieces, with each vocal turn yielding pure folk-pop bliss. Finger-picked guitar ballads, like "Farewall to Saint Dolores" or the bittersweet "Walking Away From Caroline," reveal a songwriter who is easily adept at avoiding the more maudlin tendencies of many of his contemporaries. The wit and humor in Carter's songwriting can almost be overshadowed by the starkness in tales like "Cat-Eye Willie Claims His Lover," a tragic account of a man who wins a woman in a card game and ends up being killed by her. Still, Carter creates lighter moments with the lyrical and melodic nod to the "Wabash Cannonball" in "Hey Conductor" and lifts a well-placed Bo Diddley riff in "Crocodile Man." Where Carter's voice falls somewhere between Vic Chesnutt and Garth Brooks, Grammer, like a less visceral Lucinda Williams, is the perfect complement; neither are forceful vocalists but both are altogether appropriate for the material. Overall, this is truly a modern folk classic, as Carter's unique approach to songwriting and the musical and vocal contributions of Grammer combine to make what should be remembered as a landmark album in contemporary folk music. ~ Matt Fink
Audiences and critics alike are stunned by the music of Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer.Their "postmodern mythic American" music is heavy on mysticism and storytelling, and also deeply rooted in folk, bluegrass, and country idioms.Carter conjures romantic, true fictions set amid vivid wild-west landscapes, while Grammer counterpoints his expert guitar, banjo, and voice with beautifully intoned violin, guitar, mandolin, and spine-chilling harmonies.

| | Jennifer Cutting Ocean: Songs For The Night Sea Journey CD (2005)
Tanglewood Tree music CDs
$13.45 Jennifer Cutting isn't a huge name in the folk-rock world, but if Ocean: Songs for the Night Sea Journey is any indication, the Washington, DC-based songwriter, arranger and producer is well worth getting to know -- especially if one fancies folk-rock with a strong British Isles influence. Cutting, in fact, has so many British, Irish and Celtic influences that one could easily assume she has from that part of the world. But Cutting is definitely an American; she just happens to have a major appreciation of British, Irish and Celtic folk -- and that British Isles influence asserts itself quite strongly on original material like "The Gladdest Breeze," "Call of the Siren" and "My Grief on the Sea" (all of which underscore the tranquil, pastoral nature of her work). There are a few songs on this CD that aren't entirely original; "If You Are Near," for example, combines a classical aria by ...

| | Dave Carter Drum Hat Buddha CD (2001)
Tanglewood Tree CD music
$13.69 Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer would be impressive as solo artists, but together they have become the up-and-coming duo to keep an eye on. Drum Hat Buddha follows the critically acclaimed Tanglewood Tree, featuring the same dense, symbol-filled lyrics set to fairly straightforward arrangements. Multiple violins and a cello perfectly underpin "Disappearing Man," a quiet melody that evokes a new birth -- a coming of age -- with Grammer's lovely vocal carrying the weight of the old-world religious imagery. Carter, aided by Grammer's harmony, sings the magnetic "41 Thunderer," painting a tale of the old West in a few spare words. "Highway 80" is an upbeat country stomper in the same mold as "Hey Conductor" from Tanglewood Tree, while "236-6132" is a bouncy recollection of a lover's phone number. Most of these lyrics are very heavy, and their meaning isn't always obvious. "Love, the Magician" ...

Longtime friends Jerry Garcia and David Grisman spent much of the early '90s working together on acoustic recordings of folk, country and bluegrass tunes. After Garcia's death in 1995, Grisman decided to begin releasing the prodigious backlog of music the two had accumulated, with each release covering a different genre of American music. The first, SHADY GROVE, concentrates on the folk and bluegrass that was one of their first musical loves.

| | Essential George Jones CDs (2006) Remastered
Tanglewood Tree songs
$15.95 It has a similar title and a similar length to Epic/Legacy's 1994 double-disc set The Essential George Jones: The Spirit of Country, but Epic/Legacy's 2006 collection The Essential George Jones is a different beast entirely. At 40 tracks, it's four songs shorter than the 1994 comp, but the real difference is in the song selection. Where The Spirit of Country offered a good overview of every label George recorded for between 1955 and 1989, Legacy could not get licensing for his work for Musicor in the second half of the '60s, which means there are a few big omissions here, including "Things Have Gone to Pieces," "Love Bug," "I'm a People," "Walk Through This World with Me," "Say It's Not You," and "A Good Year for the Roses." With the exception of "Things Have Gone to Pieces" and "Say It's Not You," all of those singles were on The Spirit of Country, and their absence is felt on Essential, as is the absence of novelty numbers like 1959's "Who Shot Sam" to 1976's "Her Name Is..." These silly songs are nearly as much a trademark of Jones' style as his signature ballad style, so without them -- and without the Musicor songs ...
