Sloan's live double-CD 4 NIGHTS AT THE PALAIS ROYALE handily dispels the myth that rock & roll died in the face of hip-hop and electronica in the late '90s. Not unlike Cheap Trick's LIVE AT BUDOKAN, the rabid fan response prods the band into delivering some top-notch performances. Early fare such as "People Of The Sky" and "Deeper Than Beauty" (both off of 1994's TWICE REMOVED), benefit from the kind of following that finds the crowd singing most of the songs without any vocal accompaniment from the band.
Pop references run amuck and range from the British Invasion sunshine of "The Lines You Amend" to irresistible AM-radio ear candy like "Keep On Thinkin" and "Everything You've Done Wrong." Of all the material drawn from the four Sloan albums released prior to 4 NIGHTS, 1998's NAVY BLUES provides the most highlights. Late-era Beatles ("Suppose They Close The Door"), the Raspberries at their sing-along finest ("Iggy & Angus") and Kiss circa DRESSED TO KILL ("Money City Maniacs") are all rock & roll touchstones taken from the greatly overlooked BLUES. "I Wanna Thank You" even goes so far as to recall the sound of Queen's "You're My Best Friend."
Principally recorded live at Palais Royale, Toronto, Canada. Includes liner notes by Sloan.
Personnel: Andrew Scott (piano, drums).
Recording information: Reaction Studios (1999); Sterling Sound (1999).
Sloan: Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, Andrew Scott.
2004.

4 Nights At The Palais Royale album
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough ...
| | Chills Kaleidoscope World CD (1986) (Import) Import; Australia
4 Nights At The Palais Royale CD music
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.

| | Killing Floor CD (1995) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
4 Nights At The Palais Royale music CDs
$18.79 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
4 Nights At The Palais Royale songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's ...
