The most interesting dynamic of Telek's Serious Tam is that it's on Real World Records. The label, co-founded in 1989 by Peter Gabriel and WOMAD (World of Music Art and Dance), provides global artists with the access to state of the art recording technology and audiences beyond their region. George Telek originates from the village of Raluana, near Rabaul on the Papua New Guinean island of New Britain. Telek was an already established artist on his native island and had recorded several albums before Gabriel asked him to record for Real World. Translated, most of the songs on Serious Tam are about the common themes of daily life and passionate love. This a definite global pop album with an ethnic twist. Serious Tam's tribal drum sounds and simplicity will take the listener to a better, more serene place. ~ Diana Potts
Recorded at Real World Studios, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. Includes liner notes by Nigel Williamson.

CMJ (8/7/00, p.44) - "...A visionary reggae artist with a deeply spiritual side....his thin, reedy voice and potent lyrics cry out against injustice, while pointing the way to a better life." Dirty Linen (8-9/01, p.80) - "...Telek draws from his ancient culture...but combines it with a modern pop sensibility....an ingratiating sound and one that allows him to embrace global pop in a way that has never been done quite this way until now..." Serious Tam music CDs
$14.95 First of all, you need to establish exactly which Musafir this is, as there's been some confusion. This band has now released two albums on Blue Flame, as opposed to the one of another label, which now goes under the moniker Maharaja Flamenca. This particular bunch is strongly based in Rajasthani folk music, but don't exactly limit themselves. Along with the traditional instruments of harmonium, table, sarangi, and flute, not to mention the tablas played by leader Hameed Khan, they throw in clarinet and mandolin, as well as a collaboration with world fusionists Transglobal Underground on "Ali Mullah" -- no being stuck in the ancient mud for them, then. In fact, it's the spirit of adventure that's the real motivation, whether on a sarangi solo or on the wonderful epic of "Balamji," a traditional harvest song where singer Barkat Khan gets to shine with some incendiary, swooping vocals. Musafir offer all the colors and styles of Rajasthani music, in all its glory -- past and present. ~ Chris Nickson
