$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and ...

$13.29 One of the great frustrations in George Gershwin's musical life -- actually, given the great success he enjoyed, perhaps the only great frustration of his musical life -- was the fact that he was never given credit for being a serious composer. His most ambitious large-scale works tend to be attempts to garner just that sort of credibility: "An American in Paris," "Rhapsody in Blue," "Piano Concerto in F Major" -- these are not meant to be pop confections. And yet they point up what is probably the essential truth about Gershwin's abilities: as a classical composer, he wasn't bad. As a composer of popular song and dance music, he was an unparalleled genius. And his music is, in many ways, most effective in the most intimate arrangements and settings, as pianist Michael Dulin makes clear with this respectful but joyful collection of Gershwin song arrangements, preludes, and improvisations. Dulin plays with the kind of grace and elegance that the composer would have appreciated, freely using rubato to bring out the graceful arc of his melodies, even as he adds a touch of barrelhouse stride piano here and there for a more rollicking good-time effect. Given Dulin's generally decorous playing style, a closer and more intimate recorded sound would have been preferable, but overall this is a very fine and beautifully played overview of Gershwin's piano music. ~ Rick Anderson
Experience the music of Michael Dulin, and you'll never forget it. Unique in his ability to embrace and combine musical styles - smooth jazz, new age, Americana, Celtic, classical - he has developed a highly personal musical style with wide international ...

Moussorgski: Boris Godounov
$18.99 PROGRAM NOTESSymphony No. 1 is dedicated to my son, Israel. It was Israel who suggested that my symphony be about "play" and "love." I was both appreciative and awestruck by this simple yet profound suggestion particularly since Israel is autistic and has severe difficulty with language. The middle movements of my symphony are indeed entitled "Play" and "Love" and the two outer movements serve to border the inner movements and to deal with the emotional context surrounding a special needs child. The first movement perhaps deals with my emotions arising from the enigma of it all, and the final movement is perhaps aimed more at Israel and his struggle and his ability to achieve joy and success against overwhelming odds. Symphony No. 2 ("Parmly's Dream") is a series of tableaus from the life of Parmly Billings. Parmly was the eldest son of Frederick and Julia Billings. Frederick Billings was the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad and is the namesake of Billings, Montana. Frederick and the Billings family lived in Woodstock, Vermont. Parmly lived in Billings, Montana for approximately four years in the mid-1880's. He died in Chicago on his way home, aged 25.As site specific as that sounds (i.e. only folks in Billings Montana would be interested in this piece), the Second Symphony actually has more universality than one would expect. What we have here is a simple tale of father and son and of a family tragedy. There is something in the telling that seems to affect everyone. I didn't realize this would be the case until the piece was performed and recorded. The father and son aspet, by the way, is the element that ties the two works together. Again, I didn't notice this until after I had decided to put both works on a single disk. Funny how often it works out like that. Both recordings are live recordings of the premiers. Symphony No. 1 is for orchestra. Symphony No. 2 is for orchestra, choir and 5 soloists (three vocalists representing Parmly Billings and his parents Frederick and Julia, solo piano, and Native ...

$18.99 A Note from Kathy:Music has always been a part of my life. I always thought of it as a gift to be shared, a celebration to be felt. If I can take the stresses of life away for someone for only a moment, I’ve done my job. My teachers through college and graduate school certainly shaped and molded me, providing essential tools, training, and their own life experiences to help me along my way. I am a purist really, a traditionalist when it comes to some music. What sets a vocalist apart from an instrumentalist are the words. The power of words! I have provided the translation of the Latin works as well as the words to those in English because these songs are so powerful in their text, it cannot be missed to experience the depth and share the full meaning of the music. This project has certainly taught me a lot about the recording process and myself. There are things that I will do in my next project to facilitate the editing and mixing process, such as mic proximity and location, breathing and swallowing awareness, etc. All in all, most of these songs were provided in one take. Nick tells me that this is pretty rare, but for vocal and emotional continuity, I believe it’s necessary.I named the CD, Blessed Serenity, because I discovered through the more difficult of life’s many trials, and nearly a year away from singing in the church, that this is my balance in life. My serenity. I can have whatever job to pay the bills (which always seems to be challenging and pressure oriented jobs), as long as I have music; as long as I can share my music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed producing it. It is truly my pleasure, Kathleen McBurney• Graduate degree in Voice Performance, Illinois State University, 1986 – 1988• Undergraduate degree in Voice Performance, Florida Southern College, 1982 – 1986• Tampa Ballet, Stage Manager, 1988 - 1989• Philharmonic Center for the Arts, House Manager, 1989 – 1993• IT Consulting, Office Manager / Recruiter / Sales Executive, 1993 – 2002• Nativity Catholic Church, Canter / Children’s Choir Director / Associate Director, 2000 – ...
