Otis Spann may not have been the blues, but he was sure close to being the blues pianist. Spann provided wonderful, imaginative, tasty piano solos and better-than-average vocals, and was arguably the best player whose style was more restrained than animated. Not that he couldn't rock the house, but Spann's forte was making you think as well as making you dance, and the tracks on Otis Spann Is the Blues will do both. ~ Ron Wynn

Recorded in the winter of 1960, this was the first album Otis Spann made in his tragically short life. Also on the date was Robert Lockwood, Jr., the step-son of one of the most extraordinary blues singers who ever recorded, the late Robert Johnson. Like

Recorded at Fine Studios, New York City on August 23, 1960. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.

Personnel includes: Otis Spann (vocals, piano); Robert Lockwood, Jr. (vocals, guitar).

Rolling Stone (12/2/70, p.48) - "...his piano sings...his mastery of his instrument was so complete that he could effortlessly tailor his accompaniment to the mood he wanted...as fine an album as he ever recorded..."

5 stars More tracks,more Otis
There are actually 16 tracks on this CD making it a real bargain and only one of the cuts is a repeat (or alternate take) from the Walkin' the Blues album. More Otis Spann is always a good thing.

5 stars Otis was the greatest blues pianist
And this album proves it. I first heard this record about 30 years ago. I played my new CD copy for the first time last night. Its as good as ever. This is an interesting album, because most of Otis Spann's career was spent as piano player in a blues band, and here he's basically playing solos. He covers a lot of ground, and demonstrates an originality and lyricism as a pianist that is difficult to communicate in the pure blues band context. Check it out.

Otis Spann Is The Blues album
CD $9.85  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release). The sessions benefit ...

On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first set he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." Otis Spann Is The Blues songs
CD $19.99
Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both urban pop ballads and rhythmic hymns to black empowerment, all framed around his impassioned voice. Using fractured, multi-layered background vocals (a la Marvin Gaye), and deep vocals not unlike Barry White, Burke created, over three albums, some of his most powerful, distinctive and important work. This 22-track compilation culls ...

Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD  (2006) Bonus Tracks

Otis Spann Is The Blues album
CD $17.79
Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets and horn sections, but of the two, Nutbush City Limits is a bit closer to gritty deep soul ...

Original sessions produced by Monroe Passis, Fred Mendelsohn and Joe Brown. If you really want to hear what Little Walter sounded like in his pre-amplified days and early stages of development with the Muddy Waters band, this is the one to get. The title is a bit of a misnomer as Walter is featured more as a sideman to Baby Face Leroy, Muddy Waters and others on early Parkway, Regal and Savoy sides, but it's clear that Walter at this stage of the game should have been paying royalties to both Sonny Boys and Walter Horton in particular. One of the high points features explosive slide work from Waters on a pre-Chess ...
