Personnel: Pee Wee Russell (clarinet); Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Emmett Berry (trumpet); Bob Brookmeyer (trombone); Nat Pierce (piano); Milt Hinton (bass); Jo Jones (drums). Recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York on February 23, 1961. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Personnel: Pee Wee Russell (clarinet); Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Emmett Berry (trumpet); Bob Brookmeyer (trombone); Nat Pierce (piano); Jo Jones (drums). Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Recording information: Nola Penthouse Sound Studios, New York, NY (02/23/1961-03/08/1961). Photographer: Frank Gauna. This LP (whose contents have been reissued on CD) features a reunion between tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell; they revisit "If I Could Be with You," a song they had recorded together in a classic version back in 1929. Russell was beginning to perform much more modern material than the Dixieland music associated with the Eddie Condon players and on this set (which also features trumpeter Emmett Berry, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Jo Jones), he plays a couple of Duke Ellington tunes, two originals and "Tin Tin Deo." Hawkins is also in fine form and this somewhat surprising program is quite successful. ~ Scott Yanow

Jazz Reunion
$9.65 Personnel: Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Barney Kessel (guitar); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Jimmy Rowles (piano); Joe Mondragon (bass guitar); Alvin Stoller (drums). Neither an innovator nor an iconoclast, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison is simply one of the bluesiest, hardest-swinging, and downright tastiest jazz musicians of the 20th century. A consummate sideman who worked steadily throughout his career (even getting gigs recording soundtracks in the '50s), Edison created music that always reflected his journeyman aesthetic and unerring sense of swing. Recorded in 1956, Sweets is one of the quintessential Edison albums showcasing the former Count Basie bandmember at the height of ...

Personnel: Carter Stanley (vocals, guitar); Ralph Stanley (tenor, banjo). Liner Note Author: Gary B. Reid. Recording information: 1947-1952. Along with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, the Stanley Brothers are one of the greatest of the bluegrass harmony acts. Led by Carter's lead croon and guitar, and abetted by Ralph's high-lonesome tenor and fierce banjo playing, the Stanleys started to lay down their enduring legacy on the Rich-R-Tone in the late 1940s, and those early recordings are ...
