This album, with a similar faked live atmosphere to CHARLES MINGUS PRESENTS CHARLES MINGUS, begins with the bassist speaking to an imaginary audience, and things soon get moving with "MDM," an acronym for Monk-Duke-Mingus. It intertwines three themes--Monk's "Straight, No Chaser," Ellington's "Main Stem," and Mingus' "51st Street Blues." Aside from spotlighting solos by Eric Dolphy, Ted Curson and Jimmy Knepper, this song also displays a large variety of jazz styles, from traditional to cutting edge. For "Stormy Weather," the players are reduced to a quartet of Mingus, longtime partner-in-rhythm Danny Richmond, Eric Dolphy, and Ted Curson. No standards in Mingus' hands are dry or predictable, and this one is no exception.
The third and last song here, "Lock 'Em Up"--originally titled "Hellview of Bellevue"--is a reference to Mingus' stint at the infamous New York hospital. It's an intense and intensely personal number, full of anguished voices and dissonance, and it hits the listener with all the verity of personal experience.
"My policy on a Mingus date is to give him complete freedom - not that he wouldn't take it anyway." Producer Nat Hentoff's realistic attitude to working with this controversial figure is probably the chief reason why the Mingus/Candid albums have retaine

Mingus album
$11.19 This 1960 recording features Mingus with a quartet, a small ensemble in comparison to many of his other records. The circumstances were unique; this was to be Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson's last recording with the bassist after playing with him for many months (although this certainly wasn't to be Mingus and Dolphy's final artistic pairing). This personnel crisis, rather than resulting in a stiff and stressed performance, produced one of Mingus' finest albums.
The songs here feature a fiery amalgam of blues, gospel, and folk with group improvisation. The band attempted to duplicate the feel of a club performance without the attendant hazards and sound problems; Mingus had the lights dimmed to simulate an evening gig, and he playfully banters to a non-existent audience. The version of "Original Faubus Fables" on this album is notable for the inclusion of its talking/singing sections condemning the racist governor of Georgia, which were excluded from a previously released version of the song.
This is perhaps the most cohesive set Mingus ever made, recorded during a crisis of personnel in 1960. After many months with Mingus, Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson had decided to leave. These sessions and a few to follow for Mingus and the Jazz Artists Guil

| | Eric Dolphy Candid Dolphy CD (1961)
Mingus CD music
$9.69 The early '60s New York City-based Candid was one of the first musician-run labels. Iconoclastic multi-reed player/composer Eric Dolphy was featured on several Candid albums as a sideman. The valuable document CANDID DOLPHY, consisting mainly of previously unreleased alternate takes, shows Dolphy to be a versatile accompanist. The collection is also is a fine sampler of the cutting-edge New York jazz scene of the time.
Dolphy wails the blues behind Abbey Lincoln ("T'ain't Nobody's Business"), soars with Charles Mingus (a harrowing "Stormy Weather"), and takes "Body and Soul" to exciting new places in company of Roy Eldridge and Jo Jones. Rounding out this set are three tunes from the sessions that produced the superb Booker Little album OUT FRONT, featuring Max Roach and Don Friedman.
At the time of the free form revolution in the late '50s there was something reassuring about the music of Eric Dolphy. It was as if he was there to remind the establishment that the links with old styles had merely been stretched, certainly not broken.
Recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios, New York, New York between October 20, 1960 and April 4, 1961. Includes liner notes by Barry McRae.
Personnel: Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, piccolo, flute, bass clarinet); Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Charles McPherson (alto saxophone); Coleman Hawkins, Walter Benton (tenor saxophone); Ted Curson, Lonnie Hillyer, Benny Bailey, Roy Eldridge, Booker Little (trumpet); Jimmy Knepper, Julian Priester (trombone); Nico Bunick, Kenny Dorham, Tommy Flanagan, Mal Waldron, Don Friedman (piano); Charles Mingus, Peck Morrison, Art Davis, Ron Carter (bass); Max Roach (drums, tympani); Danny Richmond, Jo Jones (drums); Roger Sanders, Robert Whitley (congas).

Mingus music CDs
$9.09 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of POINT OF DEPARTURE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit resolution by Rudy Van Gelder (1998, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of Blue Note Records "Rudy Van Gelder" Editions series.
Trying to describe Andrew Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE in words is like trying to explain the pictures made by a kaleidoscope--it's impossible to be completely articulate about something so magically unique. Of course, with an assembled cast that includes Kenny Dorham, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis, and Tony Williams all in their creative prime, Hill would have been hard-pressed not to come up with a masterpiece of these proportions. The result is, indeed, a record that is a beacon of the New Thing movement, which was coming to the foreground in the early '60s.
From oddly swinging cuts like "New Monastery" to the intricately mesmerizing "Flight 19," Hill proves to be a both a pianist and composer of incomparable range as he and his legendary sidemen explore the furthest reaches of group improvisation. The churning waltz "Refuge" offers intense ensemble passages that constantly shift colors and textures as Williams drives the group with hurricane-like waves of cymbals. The closing ballad, "Dedication," is a beautifully esoteric piece that, like the kaleidoscope, must be experienced to truly capture its true nature. For most, this will be a DEPARTURE that will take listeners on an indescribable journey.
Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 21, 1964. Originally released on Blue Note (4167). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.
Personnel: Andrew Hill (piano); Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Richard Davis (bass); Tony Williams (drums).

$9.65 Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley, author of Mingus: A Critical Biography.
Although a Mosaic box set claims to have all of Charles Mingus's Candid recordings, this CD, in addition to four duplications from the box, contains three alternate takes not included elsewhere: "Body and Soul" (featuring trumpeter Roy Eldridge and altoist Eric Dolphy), the Dannie Richmond drum solo "Melody from the Drums" and a septet runthrough on "Reincarnation of a Love Bird." A fine introduction into the music of Charles Mingus, this set still cannot compare to the Mosaic box which has the Mingus's pianoless quartet with Dolphy, Richmond and trumpeter Ted Curson, but completists will have to acquire both releases. ~ Scott Yanow
This is the last of four albums comprising all of Charles Mingus's work for the Candid label, and it contains one previously unsuspected (and, of course, unissued) alternate take of great interest. For the rest, it gathers together material that was only

Mingus CD music
$11.79 In the late 1960s, the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco, California, was a countercultural mecca whose ragtag assemblage of hippies, artists, writers, musicians, and other like-minded bohemians nurtured a stellar music scene that produced some of the greatest rock bands of all time. Filmed at San Francisco's legendary Family Dog Ballroom in September 1970, A NIGHT AT THE FAMILY DOG is an amazing document of the entire Haight-Ashbury scene distilled into one incredible night of performances from three of the era's most definitive bands: Santana, the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane. Produced by poet and jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason as part of a documentary series for the National Educational Television Network, the concert film boasts two songs by Santana, three by the Grateful Dead (one of the only known Dead performances featuring original member Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan), two by Jefferson Airplane, and an all-star jam with all three bands for an exuberant testament to one of the most exciting yet ephemeral moments in rock history.
Filmed on location at the Family Dog Ballroom in San Francisco in September, 1970, the show captures the heyday and diversity of the San Francisco sound with three of the most well known bands to emerge from the scene: Santana, The Grateful Dead including original band member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and Jefferson Airplane.

$20.99 | | Ed Burleson My Perfect World (Revisited) CD (1999) Digipak
$10.09 Ed Burleson's earthy country music is melodic and winning enough to please Nashville, but doesn't drip with any of that city's clichés. Burleson's country, here augmented by legends like producer Doug Sahm and pedal steel player Lloyd Maines, is straight-ahead, no-frills honky tonk, and his work shows enough reverence for classic country to ring authentic while avoiding the trap of sheer revivalism. Burleson is a great songwriter and singer, and the opener, "Wide Open Spaces," even shows shades of Texas predecessor Willie Nelson. Several tracks also find Burleson hunkering down into a beer-soaked ballad while avoiding any twangy, dramatic clichés. He can also slip into cruising Bakersfield-tinged honky tonk with nary a wrinkle ("No Closing Time"). This construction worker and former rodeo competitor has made a debut that puts a lot of platinum artists to shame. It's just plain old country music -- not mainstream, not insurgent, not trad -- that's done right. It's no small wonder that the late Doug Sahm picked Burleson as the flagship artist on his label, Tornado. ~ Erik Hage
