One of the longest-running California punk bands, Social Distortion began spewing musical venom in the early '80s. Over the years, their musical vision has been somewhat refined, but they've never compromised their integrity or lost a bit of their punch, a fact borne out by this 1998 live recording. Singer/songwriter Mike Ness is the archetypal tough guy with a heart of gold, chronicling the tribulations of the underclass in post-Reagan America over a jackhammer beat.
As usual, the band leavens their punky assault with occasional touches of country and roots music, as on the spiritual-sounding "Ball & Chain" and a frenzied cover of "Ring Of Fire." Though they speak from the perspective of grizzled punk survivors, the band still targets youngsters with their bad boy attitude, as evidenced by Ness' incendiary, iconoclastic stage patter. LIVE AT THE ROXY is the band at their best, blazing through new tunes and old with equal fury.

Live At The Roxy Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) How can a rock band be really important? Unfortunatelly, I“ve never been to a SD show. I live in Brazil, so I didn“t have great opportunities. What I want to say is that SD is simply one of the bands who made me see things in a diferent way. The powerful and iconoclastic point of view that they represent is a X-ray of post-Reagan America. And their insatisfaction with the status quo is something essencial for a twentieth century mind. Their legacy is simply everlasting. Like Mike Ness said, "there was a time when punk rock was dangerous..." When some people have sincerity in what they do, there are no limits for their words. Live At The Roxy CD music
$13.79 Having quietly built up a well-deserved reputation throughout the '90s as purveyors of darkly beautiful, goth-tinged music, Faith and Disease hit the year 2000 with another fine effort, the lovely Beneath These Trees. The core duo of Rosenwasser and Cooley still nail it song for song, her dreamy, haunting singing and his quietly elegant performances on guitar, keyboards, and other instruments in perfect harmony. Drummer Semple deserves note for his subtle, strong-without-seeming-it work, while Sather completes the regular lineup with her work on harmony vocals and flute. It all begins on an almost impossibly great note, with the a cappella duet between Rosenwasser and Sather on the title track shifting into "Rubina Verde." Easily the equal of the best work of Low in terms of hushed drama and atmosphere, it's both a standout track for Rosenwasser's gorgeous singing and the band's collective sense of performance. Some numbers recall the songs on Insularia, which explored ...

Live At The Roxy album
$14.35 Goaded on by madman producer Guy Stevens, Mott attempted to outdo the Rolling Stones in the excess-equals-success contest with the recording of Mad Shadows. Chock full of heavy-duty Mott rockers, such as "Walkin' With a Mountain," "Thunderbuck Ram" and "No Wheels To Ride," Mad Shadows is a perfect study in rock & roll mayhem at the start of the seventies. Even Mick Jagger found himself singing along on the final moments of "Walkin' With a Mountain." A powerful document. ~ James Chrispell
If Mott the Hoople's debut album cheerfully careened all over the place, their second, Mad Shadows, has one direction -- downward into dense murk. Cutting out most of their humor and ...

Live At The Roxy songs
$15.65 The 2005 reissue of the Jerry Garcia Band's 1978 album, CATS UNDER THE STARS, is a revelatory thing. There's a wealth of previously unreleased bonus material here that points emphatically to the strong influence of gospel music. The never-before-revealed likes of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" and "I'll Be with Thee" make those leanings abundantly clear. These soulful, organic tracks provide a substantial enhancement to the original record.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The Jerry Garcia Band's 1978 album, CATS UNDER THE STARS affords the opportunity to hear the original versions of Hunter/Garcia gems that would become staples of the Grateful Dead's live set (the story-song "Rubin and Cherise," the biblical narrative "Gomorrah"). It also hints at a seldom-considered aspect of the band's work from that period; "Palm Sunday" and "Down Home" suggest the strong influence of gospel music, with which Garcia was infatuated at ...
