The story i s about a man/monster obsessed by a beautiful opera singer. Also stars Asia Argento. Italian horror maestro Dario Argento tackles Gaston Leroux's tale of love and revenge set in a Paris Opera House, which comes complete with its very own phantom (Julian Sands)--a tortured man who was abandoned as a child and raised by the house's resident rodents. With his usual visual flair, moody atmosphere, and penchant for blood and gore, the director presents a very different twist on this timeless story. His daughter, the beautiful Asia Argento (XXX, TRAUMA), stars as the phantom's love interest and aspiring opera star.

Phantom Of The Opera Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Fairy Tale Macabre Made shortly after the disappointing 'Stendahl Syndrome', this movie (not the same film as his 'Opera') marks both a return and a departure for Italian director Dario Argento. He returns to larger budget, and goreous photography, but departs from his famous earlier giallo. The story is a fantasy retelling of Leroux's novel, with Julian Sands as the somewhat sympathetic title character. In Argento's vision, the Phantom is not horribly scarred but physically flawless and hiding a violent, amoral underbelly (due to his having been raised by rats). This 'hidden other nature' theme is echoed in the opera house itself with its underground catacombs, in Asia Argento's diva with her hidden passion, and several other characters, including the pedophile patrons of the ballet academy.
But, you ask me, is there any good gore? Well, yes, and in a lavish film such as this, the beheadings, bisections, stabbings and rat mutilations are all the more shocking.
The only drawback of the film is the handling of the opera scenes themselves, as it is obvious as the singers are lip synching (and not projecting as is necessary in a large theater), the conductor is pathetically waving his arms, about to fly away, rather than having any hint of how to conduct an orchestra, and no one at the organ has the slightest clue what to do with their fingers on the keys. Rather than film around these flaws, Argento lingers on them lovingly, as if we are being transported by the prerecorded music, rather than laughing at the silliness of it all. If more care had been taken to direct the actors in these scenes, the film would be elevated beyond a genre film into masterpiece or classic status. Phantom Of The Opera film
$10.29 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses ...

Phantom Of The Opera DVD
$13.55 As David Fincher's PANIC ROOM begins, recently divorced Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) halfheartedly tours an old New York City townhouse with her restless young daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart). Using money from her divorce settlement, the unhappy mother decides to buy the spacious home. The former abode of a wealthy eccentric, this townhouse contains an unusual extra feature, a supposedly impenetrable "panic room" equipped with surveillance monitors, a separate phone line, and other survival aids, where residents can hide in case of emergency. When three men--Burnham (Forest Whitaker), Junior (Jared Leto), and Raoul (Dwight Yoakam)--break into their new home, Meg and Sarah end up using the panic room much sooner than they could have possibly imagined. And, unfortunately for them, these intruders are not simple burglars; they possess knowledge that makes the situation much more perilous.
Hitchcockian in its confined setting and carefully doled-out suspense, Fincher's PANIC ROOM is more straightforward than his infamous FIGHT CLUB, though no less engaging. Foster (who replaced Nicole Kidman after she injured herself on the set of MOULIN ROUGE) gives her best performance since THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. The thieves are equally compelling--Whitaker shines as a likeable, sad-eyed security expert; Leto provides comic relief as a talkative brat; and Yoakam is perfectly ...

| | Counter Attack - A Tribute To Bruce Lee DVD (2005)
Phantom Of The Opera video
$14.35 After Bruce Lee's death, his friend John Ladalski conceived of a film to promote Jeet Kune Do, the martial art that Lee had developed. The film that resulted from this ambition was COUNTER ATTACK (aka THE CHINESE STUNTMAN). Ladalski's desire to showcase Jeet Kune Do was somewhat thwarted by the other martial artists and stuntmen involved in production, and as a result COUNTER ATTACK exhibits a conflict between Lee's utilitarian style and the more flowery kung-fu used for maximum visual impact on film. Bruce Li stars as a promising insurance salesman assigned to investigate the suspicious injury of a martial arts star on a film set. Over the course of his investigation, he becomes a stuntman himself and discovers that the injury was part of an insurance scam. But now, the perpetrators of the fraud and the injured star, jealous of Li's newfound popularity, plot to do away with him. In addition to the variety of martial arts on display in the film, COUNTER ATTACK also serves as a critique of corrupt elements in the Hong Kong movie industry.
This multi-volume series honoring Bruce Lee stars Bruce ...

| | Full Metal Jacket DVD (1987)
Phantom Of The Opera review
$8.79 In this riveting look at military life during the Vietnam conflict, Stanley Kubrick, who made the powerful antiwar classics PATHS OF GLORY (WWI) and DR. STRANGELOVE (the Cold War), once again explores the behavior of men in battle. FULL METAL JACKET (1987), adapted from Gustav Hasford's novel THE SHORT TIMERS, is broken down into two very different parts. The first half of the film focuses on the training of a squad of Marine grunts on Parris Island, and more specifically on the troubled relationship between the brutal drill sergeant (a frightening Lee Ermey) and an oafish misfit (a brilliant Vincent D'Onofrio) who just happens to be a sharpshooter. The second half takes the grunts to Hue City, where the climactic battle of the 1968 Tet Offensive--and the turning point of the Vietnam War--took place. The story is told through the eyes of Private Joker (Matthew Modine), a cynical aspiring photojournalist who is forced to fight for his life and the lives of his fellow recruits.
Unusually for Kubrick, FULL METAL JACKET emerged at a time when a trend for films about Vietnam was in full swing. PLATOON had proceeded Kubrick's film by a year, and lesser efforts such as HAMBURGER HILL also emerged in 1987. London's abandoned docklands may not be the most obvious choice of location to replicate the ravages of the Vietnam landscape, but this is where Kubrick shot the film, sticking to his dogged principles of not shooting outside his adopted home. A moving commentary on the dehumanizing process that occurs when soldiers prepare ...
