With a band name like Red Elvises, it's a given that the group has tendencies toward zaniness. On I Wanna See You Bellydance, zany pretty much sums up the Red Elvises' theatrical mix of surf, rockabilly and traditional Siberian music. Few surf-a-billy groups include balalaikas among their gear, but the Red Elvises find a way to make it sound natural, if quirky, within the context of the album. Rave-ups like the title track, "Rocketman" and "Voodoo Doll" feature tribal drums, twangy guitars, and raucous, Russian-tinged vocals, while "El Nino" shows off the group's genuine intstrumetnal talent. "I'm Not That Kind of Guy" and "Sad Cowboy Song" show off the Red Elvises' abundant sense of humor. For all its heavy kitsch, I Wanna See You Bellydance is entertaining -- and has a surprisingly low annoyance factor. ~ Heather Phares
the third album from Russian comedy rockers shows them once again dishing out their "Siberian Surf Rock" - traditional rock mixed w. Russian ethnic music, reckless surf & rockabilly I Wanna See You Belly Dance Music Red Elvises I Wanna See You Belly Dance Songs I Wanna See You Belly Dance Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Great intro to a great band The Red Elvises tag line says it all… "Kick ass rock n roll from Siberia!" If you are a fan or just curious about this band (with such a great name who wouldn’t be), "I want to see you bellydance" is probably their best work. It’s fun and great on a long drive. I have yet to find someone who can say they wouldn’t listen to, or buy the album after only a single play of the disk. If you are new to the band and are looking for a good companion album to this one, the Red Elvises also did the soundtrack for the movie "Six String Samurai". Both albums, and anything else by the Red Elvises for that matter (except maybe for their Live album), is at least 4 out of 5 stars in my book. In a class by itself I gave the thing 4 stars, but that's a bit dubious: Four stars in relation to what? There's nothing else like it. Most people are familiar with Frank Zappa; a few people might remember Focus (remember Hocus Pocus?). Well, take a cross between the two, throw in a generous helping of vodka, and a some top-notch guitar playing, and maybe you'll get this album. After you get past the Wild and Crazy Guys from Russia aspect, you start to notice that musicianship here is actually very good. The guitar playing is outstanding, and the overall production is tight and professional. This is crazy with brains, musicianship, and professionalism behind it. Another remarkable aspect is the wide variety of musical styles here, all done with tongue firmly in cheek. Highly recommended for those who don't take life too seriously.

$13.49 On this assured and inventive outing, Case does not disappoint, as she revisits the haunting atmosphere of earlier offerings, but also broadens her sound. Incorporating elements of country, early rock & roll, and moody film scores, Case creates a fascinatingly anachronistic aesthetic, evoking some ...

$17.45 Years removed from his gig as Ani DiFranco's drummer, Andy Stochansky indulges his fans with this double-disc effort including his new studio album and a live recording. The album, produced by Johnny Rzenik of Goo Goo Dolls, is a rich, lush, and at times orchestral attempt to place smart melodic songs into a larger, fleshed-out sound that harks back at times to classic Bowie. Set upon recapturing the pop ground he had invaded with Future Shock, Hancock relies upon many of the former's ingredients for yet another go-'round on Perfect Machine. High-tech producer Bill Laswell is back, so is scratchmaster D. ST. -- and armed with a warehouse of mostly digital keyboards, Hancock adds the distinctive bass of Bootsy Collins and the Ohio Players' vocalist Sugarfoot, who always sounds as if he had just swallowed something. The music is mostly thumping, funk-drenched techno-pop which still has some verve, particularly the designated single "Vibe Alive" and the "Maiden Voyage" interlude as heard through an electronic fun-house mirror. But this is not really an advance ...
