This 118 minute feature film DVD stars Angela Bassett givin g a star-making performance as rock legend Tina Turner in t his outstanding biopic. 17-year old Anna Mae leaves the backwoods of Tennessee for St. Louis to be reunited with her stern mother and elder sister, Alline. One evening, Alline brings Anna Mae to the night club where a group led by singer-hearthrob Ike Turner plays. Ike makes a nightly ritual of passing the microphone around the dance hall and on one visit to the club Anna Mae grabs it and belts out a song. Soon Anna's whole life is in Ike's hands: he's changed her name to Tina and taken total control of her singing career. Though he's paternalistic and artistically demanding, she's fascinated by his forceful masculinity, stylistic charisma and creative vision. But not long after their quickie Mexican marriage, things turn sour. Ike viciously abuses Tina, who, eventually struggles to free herself of his psychotic reign of terror. The true story of Tina Turner's rocky road to stardom and her abusive relationship with domineering husband Ike. Outstanding, gutsy performances by the leads. Academy Award Nominations: Best Actress--Angela Bassett, Best Actor--Laurence Fishburne. "What's Love Got to Do with It" is the biography of singer-performer Tina Turner.
Shot in Technicolor and widescreen.
In 1979, Ms. Turner met manager Roger Davies, and together they made the album "Private Dancers," released in 1983. Her best-selling autobiography, "I, Tina," on which the film is based, was a best-seller when it came out in 1986. The film, however, had a difficult gestation period: Howard Ashman, the film's initial producer, dropped out in the early stages of its conception.
Angela Bassett's previous screen appearance as Betty Shabazz in Spike Lee's "Malcolm X," highlighted the actress' talents.
Bassett's dynamic performance in "What's Love Got To Do With It" was lauded by critics. Her performance involves no singing. Tina Turner per-recorded all the songs for the soundtrack.
Bassett and Fishburne worked together on John Singleton's "Boyz N' the Hood," which reportedly influenced Fishburn's decision to make this film. Fishburne was initially reluctant to accept the role because he felt Ike's character was drastically underdeveloped.
Apparently, the script went through several re-edits, with character details constantly being revised. Of the 17 drafts, some examined the nuances of Tina's relationship to her parents.
Rated BBFC 18 by the British Board of Film Classification.

A Classic This is a classic, a must have film. What more can I say? HOLLA BACK Submitted by Chicago119 (WILD 100'S) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Courage Under Extreme Pressure I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the music. Growing up, I heard many things about Ike and Tina Turner but had no idea how much the lady endured during her marriage to Ike. I also had no idea that her own mother had betrayed her basically to live a better existance (since Ike was greasing her palms with cash and even bought her a new house). Angela Basset's performance was awe inspiring. My hat goes off to Tina Turner or any woman who endures such abuse for any length of time and manages to emerge with her mind, body and soul intact.
I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone whether they happen to be Tina Turner fans or not. It exposes abuse and sends a definite message about how frightening, humiliating and inappropriate it is to mistreat another human being. It also gives hope to those who are now or have ever been victims. It says that despite it all, with determination, you can survive. Awsome job, both Bassett and Fishburne. One of those movies I somehow overlooked when it first was released. I somehow found myself watching it and enjoying it everytime it came on tv. Bassett and Fisburne give A+ performances, the music is great and boy did they do a good job in every aspect on this film! I think it is already a classic. $13.05 A young boy from a broken home learns the harsh realities of life after adopting an awkward greyhound and befriending a mysterious figure from his mother's past in this tender coming-of-age story starring Gillian Anderson, Robert Carlyle, and Tyrone McKenna. Donal (McKenna) and his single mother, Kate (Anderson), share a small home in Belfast. When their finances start to dwindle, Donal goes to work for local dog-trainer Good Joe (Ken Stott) to help make ends meet. Despite the benevolence that his name implies, Good Joe is anything but, and has a reputation for going back on his word. So when Good Joe recognizes Donal's special connection to dogs and offers him the "Mighty Celt" if the canine can win three races in a row, the boy is understandably wary. Things start to look up, however, as the races get underway and a man named O (Carlyle) returns to strike up a warm friendship with Donal. It's obvious from the onset that Good Joe is suspicious of O, and Donal's mother Kate makes no secret of the fact that she would rather O had never returned to town. In the aftermath of a dramatic revelation that will change ...
