This is a series of haunting experimental jazz and new music tableaux, each dedicated to a loved one or an artistic influence. The first track honors Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky. Fittingly, it's a half-hour-long epic of silences, stillness, and epiphany, with mournful strings and thunderous drums capturing Tarkovsky's mythic reverence for nature and the unknown. Aina Kemanis's vocals and Jeff Gauthier's violin coalesce to form lovely rain clouds after the passing of Cline's drum storms. "Rose Window" follows on a snaking stand-up bass line before Kemanis's vocals ride lulling synth pads towards melodic heights. The next track finds drum and piano signaling each other in an avant-garde game of call and response before fading into realms of ethereal vocals and droning Buddhist bowls. "Audacity" starts with pounding drums and lonesome string refrains before careening into addictive blasts of unglued electric guitar and funky organ. With the line between composition and improvisation impossible to trace, this is obviously a work of true passion and artistry. The players use the composition's structure as a guidebook through the borders between East and West, mortality and eternity, quiet meditation, and raging passion.

Sparks Fly Upward album
$10.75 In which the lanky longtime axe hero of Los Angeles' creative music scene seeks to "explore the possibilities of many stringed instruments and their timbres...and to create a climate of catharsis." Oh yeah, and get his noise improv rocks off in the guitar army company of close compadres Woodward Lee Aplanalp, Carla Bozulich, and G.E. Stinson. So the relevant consumer warning is for anyone (like maybe Bozulich fans expecting some traces of the Geraldine Fibbers) who find torrential maelstroms of guitar noise anathema to steer clear -- it's dense pack time here with four guitars, rhythm section, and occasional guests Zeena Parkins and Wayne Peet.
There's no easy entry, because "Spider Wisdom" leaps right in with abstract swatches of guitar effects -- the sonic treatments come creeping and crawling at you from all sides of the web. Cline's pieces rarely stay in one vein, so "Chicagoan" boasts stated themes before locking into a foundation riff with a space bloop effects solo by Aplanalp that resolves into a holocaust, followed by a very direct Cline solo over that almost vintage jazz-rock fusion riff.
The stately "Progression" waxes melancholy, "The Ringing Hand" is an extended display of Cline's ...
| | Alex Cline Constant Flame CD (2001)
Sparks Fly Upward CD music
$14.59 Each composition on THE CONSTANT FLAME is dedicated to a different artistic or personal inspiration. The result defies categorization: hauntingly elegiac, thunderously experimental, quiet, meditatively ambient. "Summoning Spirits" commences with Alex Cline bashing around on his drums. The dreamily reverent "Benediction" follows, dedicated to Aina Kemanis, whose vocals dissolve gracefully into clouds of falling synth drones, Jeff Gauthier's violin, and the rolling surf of Cline's cymbals. The title track starts in that same vein before the day breaks, and flocks of birdlike jazz-fusion coalesce, all hooting horns and electric guitar. Things go deep for "Evening Bell" with piano and dreamy strings eventually wandering into a land of gongs and thumping tom toms as Kemanis charts an almost folk-singing course straight home to the heart. Each track writhes and rages like a dancing light in the darkness, making this ideal "deep listening" music. A poetic evocation of the crossroads between Eastern and Western artistry, life and ...
| | David Gilmore Ritualism CD (2001)
Sparks Fly Upward music CDs
$13.95 After years of sideman work with Steve Coleman, Don Byron, and many others, guitarist David Gilmore makes a bold and beautiful statement with his long-awaited solo debut, Ritualism. At the core of the project is a high-octane quartet, with Gilmore, George Colligan on piano and keyboards, Brad Jones on double bass, and Rodney Holmes on drums. The presence of guest horn players David Binney, Ravi Coltrane, and Ralph Alessi boosts the excitement level even further. Gilmore brandishes a rugged tone and delivers his lines with a sharp, staccato attack and an astonishing rhythmic fluidity. His writing ...

Sparks Fly Upward music CDs
$9.69 At first glance, Baltimore might seem an unusual city for cultivating one of the hottest sounds in mid-90s Latin jazz. The genre has never been more popular, yet always seems more associated with the cosmopolitan jungles of major cities with Hispanic populations--Miami, Los Angeles, NYC. But The Rumba Club, whose eclectic music blends traditional salsa with tinges of Calypso and Afro-Cuban influences, is rapidly expanding those cultural boundaries. Already one of the East Coast's hottest Latin performance ensembles for over a decade, their release on Palmetto Records, desde la capital, aims to bring the excitement of their live concerts to a national audience. Producer Andy Gonzalez picked an exciting batch of tunes here, some from the Rumba Club's regular set list, others originals from the band. The originals ...
