| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Air Mail Music: Tunisia
$13.09 Personnel: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Uri Caine (piano); Greg Cohen (bass instrument); Joey Baron (drums). Audio Mixer: James Farber. Recording information: Avatar Studio, New York, NY (02/22/2009). STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish ...

$7.59 Journey: Gregg Rolie (vocals, keyboards); Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar, synthesizer, background vocals); Ross Valory (bass, background vocals); Steve Smith (drums, percussion). Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Journey (Rock): Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon, Ross Valory (guitar); Gregg Rolie (keyboards); Steve Smith (drums). With the platinum triumph of Infinity still ringing in their ears like coins in a slot machine, Journey was now committed to completing their transformation from jazz fusion/prog rock mavens into arena rock superstars with their fifth album, 1979's Evolution. This transition (also clearly illustrated by the futuristic insect gracing each album cover henceforth) would not come without its growing pains, however, and while producer Roy Thomas Baker was back for a second go-round, original drummer Aynsley Dunbar would be the first casualty of the band's new direction. Thankfully, former Ronnie Montrose skin-beater Steve Smith soon brought his college-trained jazz fusion background to the table, and the band was ready to get back to work. If Infinity had defined a new songwriting formula for the act, Evolution only served to develop it and streamlined it further, clearly qualifying as their strongest effort to date and endearing the band to millions of FM rock listeners in the process. With commercial rock hits like "Lovin', Touchin', ...
| | John Wasem Sparrow Four Sessions CD (2007)
Air Mail Music: Tunisia
$11.39 With each day that passes, Tennessee born songwriter John Harlan Wasem has quickly become one of Chicago's most promising performers. Through his crafty songwriting and unyielding tour schedule (150 shows in 2005), Wasem has been rapidly gaining the attention of thousands across the country and beyond. JHW displays his musical roots by alternating styles with each song, while still maintaining a folk-rock sensibility. John's music demonstrates the influence of the legends, such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan, but still flows with an originality that stands out on its own. His vocals groove with a unique, hard-edge dynamic that is rarely found in today's new artists. Wasem's percussive guitar work, powerful vocals, and energetic stage presence provide his audience with an energy that is universally welcomed. It’s safe to say that 2005/06 have been exciting times for the Chicago-based songwriter. John teamed up with his good friend, drummer, ...
| | Two Tons Of Steel Not That Lucky CD (2009)
Air Mail Music: Tunisia
$9.79 Personnel: Tom Gillam (vocals, background vocals); Kevin Geil (vocals); Denny Mathis (guitar, background vocals); Dennis Fallon (guitar); Lloyd Maines (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Brian Beken (fiddle); Chris Rhoades (upright bass, electric bass); Chris Dodds, Chris Dodds (drums, background vocals); Drew Womack, John Greenberg, Mike Morgan, Walt Wilkins (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Pat Manske. Recording information: The Zone, Dripping Springs, TX; Treehouse Productions. Arranger: Lloyd Maines. Two Tons of Steel has been one of Austin's biggest bands for almost two decades. Most of the players have been holding down day jobs, which has hampered their fortunes outside of the Lone Star State, but their annual "Two Ton Tuesdays," a summer residency at Gruene Hall, one of the state's best-known dancehalls, have been selling out the club for more than a decade. The band lives up to its name with a sound that could almost be called heavy metal country, a larger than life vibe marked by Dennis Fallon's twang-heavy guitar and the passionate vocals of singer, songwriter, and frontman Kevin Geil. Geil writes tunes that jump out of the speakers and grab you around the neck with the force of a lonesome drunk in a smoky, Saturday night honky tonk. He shows off his songwriting chutzpah early on by referencing Elvis Presley on "Hold Over Me," a tough country-rock love song. Most writers who to try to get mileage out of dropping the King's name tend to get overly sentimental and maudlin. Geil's ...
