Marrakech Festival album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all ...

| | Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology CDs (1995)
Marrakech Festival songs
$15.65 FUNKIFY YOUR LIFE is the definitive Meters collection, capturing the group's transformation from slinky instrumentalists to rollicking funkateers. Disc 1, THE JOSIE YEARS, overflows with the band's trademark sound-Art Porter's breezy Hammond organ playing, George Porter's bubbling bass, Ziggy Modeliste's in-the-pocket timekeeping, and Leo Nocentelli's crackling jazz-flavored guitar style. This batch of '60s-era tracks contains the Meters' lone Top 40 hits ("Cissy Strut," "Sophisticated Cissy"), and songs such as "Look-Ka Py Py" and "Same Old Thing" dig deeply into the kind of syncopated groove normally associated with the JB's. Later material like "Zony Mash" and "Stretch Your Rubber Band" experiments with the nuances of bass-heavy reggae and psychedelic funk.
Disc 2, THE REPRISE/WARNER BROS YEARS, consists of the Meters' '70s output, where Cyril Neville joined the line-up, and the band started adding more vocals to the mix. This period found the Meters expanding their sound, exploring soulful Caribbean sounds ("Soul Island"), funky New Orleans dance crazes ("Do The Dirt"), party anthems ("Hey Pocky A-Way"), and sinewy funk ("Africa," later covered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers). These songs and more make ...
| | Five Deez Kinkynasti CD (2003) (Import) Germany
Marrakech Festival album
$8.69 Anime sensibilities and underground hip-hop attitude mingle with disco flourishes, funky breakbeats, and a bit of experimental dub's crackling reverb in Fat Jon's world. He's only one-fourth of the Five Deez crew, but his frenetic production on Kinkynasti can't help but overshadow the serviceable rapping. Recalling De La Soul, Kool Keith, and Prince Paul without sounding like any of them, Kinkynasti has too much going on for anyone but the most skilled rappers to overcome. To their credit, Five Deez keep it simple lyrically and concentrate on the party. "Funky" and "B Girl" could accompany a raging kegger on Venus, and "Sextraterrestrail" ends up as the highlight with its surreal robot and humanoid lover exchange. Down-tempo instrumentals, a reflective cover of Slick Rick's "Hey Young World," and the relaxed vibe of the vocals offer up some deeper moments and a relief from the album's overall zaniness. With ...
| | Milt Hinton Trio CD (1977)
Marrakech Festival CD music
$14.75 Over the years, Hank Jones' work has been impressively consistent. The veteran pianist can, at times, be predictable and short on surprises, but rarely does one encounter a Jones album that is flat-out disappointing. Like other albums that Jones provided in the late '70s, The Trio doesn't take a lot of chances, but is solid and pleasing. Produced by Chiaroscuro president Hank O'Neal, this 1977 session finds Jones forming an acoustic piano trio with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Bobby Rosengarden -- and not surprisingly, the three of them enjoy a consistently strong rapport on original material as well as familiar standards like "I'll Remember April," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and "S'Wonderful." Hinton and Rosengarden lay out on "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," giving the swinging yet lyrical Jones a chance to play unaccompanied. But most of the time, the musicians perform as a threesome on this album (which should not be confused with another Jones effort that has also been called The Trio -- that session was recorded for Savoy in 1955 and united him with bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Kenny Clarke). Originally released on vinyl, this album was finally reissued on CD in 2003 -- and without any alternate takes or bonus tracks. A lot of alternate takes were recorded at this 1977 session, but regrettably, all of them were lost. Hardcore collectors will be disappointed ...
