This late '40s Blue Note date groups jazz legend Sidney Bechet with cornetist Wild Bill Davison and pianist Art Hodes and injects a fresh dose of vitality into Bechet's hard-driving style of New Orleans jazz. Backed by a strong rhythm section, the three musicians swap leads on classics like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Basin Street Blues," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Such traditional songs as "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" (note the swinging, hand-clap intro) are given such energized readings as to make them immune to criticisms of shallow revivalism.

Davison's ragged tone and strong improvisatory skills are impressive throughout, but Bechet, who only plays soprano sax on this session, is clearly the leader here, blazing ahead of the ensemble at times with his relentless attack, heavy, dramatic vibrato, and clear tone. RUNNIN' WILD is a vital, pulse-quickening collection (just check out the title track) that might surprise those who consider classic jazz "quaint."

The album's opening track, "Sweet Leaf," a salute to one of the band's favorite smokeable substances, contains one of metal's heaviest guitar riffs, courtesy of Tony Iommi. Another eternal band favorite is the grim, post-nuclear war tale "Children of the Grave." Vocalist Ozzy Osbourne ...

By the mid-'70s, a number of problems were threatening to break up the original line-up of Black Sabbath. The stress brought on by lengthy touring, drug use, and alcoholism had begun to dilute the band's original, influential heavy metal. Sabbath began to drift away from the straight-ahead power rock of such classic albums as PARANOID and SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, as evidenced by its final two albums to feature singer Ozzy Osbourne, 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER ...

PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes ...

All The Reasons
Victoria Bouffard All The Reasons CD  (2007)

Runnin' Wild music CDs
CD $18.99
“What took you so long?”That’s not just a line from one of her songs, it’s what fans of Victoria Bouffard have been asking for years. Victoria’s first album, “All the Reasons”, was recorded in August 2006 at Signature Sounds Studio with producer David “Goody” Goodrich. It’s a record of where her music has come from, and a hint at the future. And it was worth the wait.Victoria performed at open mikes under the radar until Ellis Paul asked her onstage at Caffe Lena to perform “We Belong”. As a result, she landed her first headlining show there, and opened for Lowen & Navarro multiple times. She’s continued performing at local venues as well as festivals including Fetish Fest. But until now, her only recording credit was the infamous Lowen & Navarro “Love Song” recorded at WPYX and released on their fanclub cd and a WPYX cd.“All the Reasons” is a collection of nine originals and three covers, with additional guitars, piano, bass, and kalimba by Goody, and guest vocals by Catherine Norr. Victoria played the flute as a nod to her early classical training. It’s full of variety - electric, acoustic, witty, melancholy, simple, complex. But it’s all her, all tied together in her rich voice, which is more often described as “you make me think of...” than “you sound like...”The songs are intelligent and insightful, sometimes observations of dysfunctional characters, sometimes personal. Some are presented as story songs, others as poetry wrapping iteself around a single idea. But they always seem as if she’s trying to let you in on some secret, yet stopping just short of revealing it. She won’t tell you who she’s visiting with in “Red Pajamas”, she won’t reveal who’s asking for “All the Reasons”, or who deserves to be called “Empty Girl”. ...
