| | Donald Byrd Blackjack CD Donald Byrd Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
One of three Donald Byrd albums from 1967 (the end of his hard bop period), this recording features the trumpeter/leader with altoist Sonny Red, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Billy Higgins. The six tunes (five of which are originals by Byrd or Red) are all quite obscure and to one extent or another quite explorative. One can sense that Byrd wanted to break through the boundaries and rules of hard bop but had not yet decided on his future directions. The music does swing and highlights include "West of the Pecos" and "Beale Street"; Byrd and Red in particular are in excellent form throughout the date. ~ Scott Yanow
UK pressing features a total of 7 tracks including 'Eldorardo', 'Blackjack', 'All Members' & 'Beale Street'. EMI. 2000.

Blackjack album
$10.15 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
The fact that THE PROCRASTINATOR is a shade more atmospheric than other Morgan recordings from this period can be attributed to several factors. For one, the presence of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes gives Morgan new colors to work with as a composer, which he does to great effect on the title cut. The title cut features an elegiac opening statement reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet; the tune ultimately yields to a sort of long-form variation on the blues. Another factor is the continued involvement of Wayne Shorter as a composer on Morgan's dates. Shorter's two contributions, the ballad "Dear Sir" and the bossa "Rio" share a questioning, ...

| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Blackjack music CDs
$11.19 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was quickly deleted. When it was reissued on CD in the 1990s, it was only in print for a short time as well. ...
| | Freddie Hubbard Blue Spirits CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Blackjack songs
$8.45 This excellent 1966 set features a diverse range of ensembles, all lead by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The first is an octet, featuring congas and a euphonium; the second, a seven-member group, including the great McCoy Tyner on piano; the third is a sextet that boasts drummer Elvin Jones and Herbie Hancock (who doubles on piano and celeste). James Spaulding lends his alto sax and flute to two of the groups, and Joe Henderson is in two as well (his melodic, yet adventurous, tenor sax playing is especially notable). Also featured are tenor player Hank Mobley, bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Harold Mabern, and drummer Pete La Roca.
The fare on BLUE SPIRITS is in keeping with the hard bop of the era. A heavy soul-jazz influence is heard on the opening "Soul Surge" and the Latin-tinged "Cunga Black," but Hubbard's ...

| | Troy Andrews End Of The Beginning CD (2005)
Blackjack CD music
$12.65 Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews is the next big thing out of New Orleans. While "Shorty" is not yet out of his teens, his jazz stylings are ferocious compositions that can hold court with anybody at anytime in any arena. The general music listening public wants to hear good tunes played with conviction. They want the musicians on the bandstand to believe in what they're playing, to be excited and to be capable of displaying an impressive array of musical chops. This combination of factors is more elusive than it might seem, for the forces of youthful exuberance and instrumental virtuosity are usually found at opposite ends of the spectrum: young performers are usually all about the energy and the potential, while veteran cats on the scene can play just about anything, but somehow they lost the fire along the way. Every once in a blue moon, though, along comes someone who can merge the forces of exuberance and virtuosity and unleash them on an unsuspecting public-the latest in this exclusive line of blue moon "specials" being Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. While it may seem like hyperbole to place him in a class of folks like Stevie Wonder, Derek Trucks and Miles Davis (people who were musical shamen at a young age), Andrews belongs there and any doubts you may harbor will evaporate after seeing him perform. Andrews plays trombone and trumpet. He is a man to be reckoned with on both. In fact, even before he was a man, he was a man to be reckoned with in musical conversations. A product of New Orleans culturally rich Treme neighborhood, Andrews was a bandleader by the age of 6. That's right, at 6 years old, he was leading a band on the streets of the French Quarter, and they made so much damn scratch that "Shorty" had to invest in extra belts to wrap around his waist, for the weight of all the coins he was collecting was dragging his pants down. While Andrews was promenading around the streets of New Orleans as a youngster with his band in tow, he was also absorbing lessons at the knee of his older brother James, a dynamic musical performer known all around ...
