(1 Customer Review)
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
In the late 1950s, Jimmy Smith recorded a seemingly endless number of sessions for Blue Note, the label that brought him to worldwide attention. Many of the subsequently released albums were culled from tracks recorded at various sessions with a wide range of sidemen. Arguably, one of the most successful of these conglomerations is the exceptional HOUSE PARTY.
Smith was at the height of his popularity, defining a style that would be monstrously influential to all who would come after him. Here he leads the rather large ensemble through a set of mostly standards; the two Charlie Parker-composed favorites, "Au Privave" and "Confirmation" are a couple of the most charged-up statements of these enduring works. Throughout, Smith churns and burns with the phenomenal energy and dexterity that made him a household word in the jazz world. For hard bop fans, this is a Jimmy Smith collection that demands attention.

When Jimmy Smith exploded onto the jazz scene in 1956, he changed everything about the way the organ was used and perceived in jazz. His first two years of recording were mind-bogglingly prolific, producing 13 albums. Three marathon jam sessions during this period produced some of Smith's finest early work, including THE SERMON. Smith displays both a youthful fire and a musical wisdom beyond his years throughout the ...

| | Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges CD (1960) Remastered; Digipak
House Party music CDs
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where ...
| | Lee Morgan Gigolo CD (1965) Bonus Track; Remastered
House Party songs
$8.99 More quintessential hard bop from one of the genre's leading figures at the height of his considerable powers as a composer and trumpeter. Morgan had just returned to solo work a year earlier after his second stint with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers; in 1965 the trumpeter also released CORNBREAD and THE RUMPROLLER and did numerous sessions as a sideman. Morgan composed the title track, and three others including the Coots/Gillespie ballad "You Go To My Head" round things out.
"Yes I Can, No You Can't" opens with the rhythm section laying down a churning vamp; the horns enter with a typical Morgan statement, funky, swaggering and confident. "Speedball" is a bebop-style blues, but more relaxed, with a secondary theme appearing in the third chorus of the head. "Trapped," a modified minor blues, is more urgent, while "The Gigolo" is a brooding and majestic jazz waltz more evocative of a bullfight than of the ballroom. Throughout, ...
