Bill Charlap's art is a most refined and classic one. For starters, the things which seem to matter most to him--touch, tone, lyricism, choice of material--hark back to a time when jazz musicians played songs (not compositions) and the music could readily be found on the airwaves. The son of Broadway composer Moose Charlap and singer Sandy Stewart, Mr. Charlap is not a historical artifact so much as a respectfully playful preservationist.
Joining forces with the unrelated but musically connected Peter and Kenny Washington on bass and drums respectively, he delivers a stellar set of standards. Charlap's secret is approaching each track from a singer's perspective even claiming that "the lyric dictates my [instrumental] approach." Highlights include a ruminative, moody "The Man That Got Away," a chipper "On A Slow Boat To China" and a languorous, drop-dead gorgeous "One For My Baby."

Written in the stars: a good standard's review Bill Charlap is a good surprise for me.It's the first CD I got with that jazz pianist. I must hear more of his work to give you an honest opinion about. Submitted by geraldofortes (Santa Isabel, SP, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Simply Sublime I first heard of Bill Charlap when listening to a piece of National Public Radio. I was so intrigued by the bits I heard, I bought the CD immediately. There is so much elegance, emotion, sensitivity and subtlety in this album, in addition to great selections, I can listen to it over and over again, and often do. A stunning musical achievement. $11.89 Composer songbook albums performed by jazz instrumentalists are nothing new, but pianist Bill Charlap's takes on the exuberant and tender tunes of Leonard Bernstein make for an inspired addition to this tradition. From the opening trill on drummer Kenny Washington's hi-hat, "Cool" (from ...

| | Gilbert O'Sullivan Back To Front CD (1972) (Import) Japan; Remastered
Written In The Stars music CDs
$31.55 This is the Japanese import reissue of Gilbert O'Sullivan's BACK TO FRONT featuring 12 remastered tracks.
Gilbert O'Sullivan was a retro artist in the sense of looking like a refugee from the 1930s, and his music hearkened back to simpler times, with witty lyrics that took ordinary, everyday living and found something to weave from it coupled with melodies that didn't need fancy production, just a man sitting at the piano, singing really quite pretty tunes. And in a business sense, his albums also hearkened back to the '60s as he attempted to keep a distance between the tracks that were included on albums and the hit singles that he was racking up regularly. Back to Front was the pinnacle of his achievements, his only number one album, squeezing in just one week at the top in January 1973 and although it included the chart-topping single "Clair," the album did not feature any of the other hits he had achieved throughout 1972. Instead, Back to Front served up another 12 songs with well crafted melodies and lyrics that obviously had a lot of thought and tender loving care put into them. The intro to "I Hope You'll Stay" was a true introduction to ...
