How do you capture spontaneous creation? Blue Note's answer was to present the widest possible variety of performances on one CD in order to capture the sense of someone who is spontaneous in every performance. They succeeded admirably! Three originals, four solo interpretations of other composer's work, singing around the piano of Herbie Hancock, facing off with the soprano sax of Wayne Shorter, and a hysterical "Beverly Hills Blues" (improv with Robin Williams), are the contents but one. That one is "Another Night In Tunisia," sung with The Manhattan Transfer and Jon Hendricks. It's a must for any collection..
Personnel includes: Bobby McFerrin, Robin Williams, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, The Manhattan Transfer. Personnel: Bobby McFerrin (vocals, percussion); Cheryl Bentyne, Janis Siegel, Jon Hendricks, Alan Paul, Manhattan Transfer, Robin Williams , Tim Hauser (vocals); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano). Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA; Different Fur, San Francisco, CA; Digital Magnetics. Photographer: Mary Mack. Unknown Contributor Roles: Jon Hendricks; Manhattan Transfer. Bobby McFerrin is heard in prime form throughout this date, which was the follow-up to his classic The Voice. A few of the numbers are taken unaccompanied, and these include memorable renditions of "Thinkin' About Your Body," "I Hear Music," and "Mañana Iguana." Pianist Herbie Hancock duets with McFerrin on "Turtle Shoes"; "Another Night in Tunisia" (taken from the Manhattan Transfer's Vocalese album) features McFerrin with the vocal quartet and Jon Hendricks; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter interacts with the vocalist on "Walkin'"; and an eccentric "Beverly Hills Blues" has "assistance" from comedian Robin Williams. A continually intriguing release with plenty of wit from the innovative singer. ~ Scott Yanow

$12.69 New Ark's a Moverin by Amiri Baraka Kimako's Blues PeopleJust word-sampled an old gospel horse "Old Ark's a Moverin" to lay out a more recent phenomenon. Old Ark you know, "New-Ark" (the actual charter name), is this city, of some 275,000, 12 miles from "The Apple", called now, on the young side, "Brick City". Where we have travailed and struggled so many years.Just a minute ago, New Ark was known as "Bad place, tough place", leading car theft town, Black-town Criminal, you like we sposed to be. But now we got a questionable "Renaissance" arriving, for whom? Good question. Buildings going up. Lotta people priced outta here. Buppies spotted like Killer Ants in SF tales, headed for here, middle management for Iblis & them. But inside, and aside from that and them. There's a real rebirthing going on. This one for sure on the side of the people. A rebirth of indigenous arts. Not just hollow institutional hype which brings the big money acts in and leaves the homegrown frustrated in the dust, hence creating no real educational growth for the indigenous folk. But now there's music, poetry, drama, painting, plus sharp political dialogue and motion being and bopping all over the place! Halim Suliman is a key figure in this new uprising, he is one the most New Ark' characterizing poets here. Always somewhere running the word-music down. Halim is one of the city's best-known Djali (Griot in French) running the old time Djeli Ya (like Shango make the sky holler). A regular at Kimako's Blues People, Verse 4 Verse, of ...
