MERCY, MERCY has been entirely remixed and includes 3 previously unissued tracks.
This CD reissue brings back the finest all-round recording by Buddy Rich's big band. The original version of "Channel 1 Suite" is a classic and contains tenor saxophonist Don Menza's most memorable solo, plus a couple of brilliant improvisations from the explosive drummer/leader. Another highlight is an inventive Phil Wilson arrangement of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," and even "Alfie" (a melodic feature for altoist Art Pepper) and "Ode to Billie Joe" come across well. In addition to the original LP program, three selections were released for the first time on this CD. "Chelsea Bridge" is particularly significant, for it showcases Pepper, who was making a brief (and unsuccessful) comeback seven years before he finally returned to the scene. This spirited and often-exciting set is a real gem and is essential. ~ Scott Yanow

| Mercy, Mercy Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) THE Desert Island Classic This live recording, made by Buddy at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, has long been considered by many critics to be THE 5 Star recording of the Buddy Rich Big Band in the 60's.
Known as "the Mercy Mercy Band", the strength of the band is obvious, with AL Porcino, legendary lead trumpeter, holding down the brass, with Don Menza, Art Pepper, and Pat LaBarbera in the sax section.
The most notable track on this recording is the original Channel One Suite, written by Bill Reddie, which to my mind is Buddy's premier solo vehicle. I waited years for this to be available again. Buddy's press roll at the end is nothing short of astonishing.
The original LP didn't have Chavala, Mr. Lucky, or Chelsea Bridge; Chavala, from the musical "Fiddler On The Roof" is notable for Buddy's snare drum technique and a brief solo spot by Pepper. If you're a drummer, put on headphones and listen to The Master at work. Chelsea Bridge is an earlier recorded version of the track made famous on an RCA rcording, and shows the development of a chart over time. Buddy and Art get into an interesting, albeit short, exchange on this one, with Art clearly showing the influence of, among others, John Coltrane in his playing. Mr. Lucky is a straight ahead big band swing chart, arranged by Phil Wilson, and featuring the incomparable tenor work of Menza.
Don Piestrup, one of Buddy's favorite arrangers, contributed Goodbye Yesterday, and Menza steps in with Acid Truth, two of my favorites. The title track, Mercy Mercy, arranged by Phil Wilson, was written by Joe Zawinul, and made famous by Cannonball Adderley. Buddy thought it would make a great vehicle for the band, and I heartily agree.
This CD is a must have for any big band jazz collector or student, along with Big Swing Face, one of Rich's previous releases on Pacifc Jazz. Absolutely essential for any serious jazz collection.

Mercy, Mercy album
$9.35 The Blue Note reissue of SWINGIN' NEW BIG BAND includes eight previously unreleased bonus tracks.
1966 was a most illogical time for anyone to try forming a new big band but Buddy Rich beat the odds. This CD reissues the first album by the Buddy Rich Orchestra, augmenting the original Lp program with nine previously unissued performances from the same sessions. The arrangements (eight by Oliver Nelson along with charts by Bill Holman, Phil Wilson, Jay Corre, Don Rader and others) swing, put the emphasis on the ensembles and primarily feature Corre's tenor although trumpeter Bobby Shew, altoist Pete Yellin, pianist John Bunch and guitarist Barry Zweig are also heard from. Most of the songs did not stay in the drummer's repertoire long (other than Bill Reddie's adaptation of "West Side Story" and "Sister Sadie") and in fact only three members of the 17-piece orchestra would still be working for Rich a year later. An enjoyable and somewhat historic set. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded in September 1966.

| | Buddy Rich Big Swing Face CD (1967)
Mercy, Mercy CD music
$7.99 Big Swing Face not only reissues the second recording by Buddy Rich & His Big Band but doubles the program with nine previously unissued performances from the same engagement at the Chez Club in Hollywood. Rich's orchestra was in its early prime, displaying a very impressive ensemble sound, charts by Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Bob Florence, Bill Potts and others, and such soloists as altoist Ernie Watts (a newcomer), trumpeter Bobby Shew, Jay Corre on tenor and the remarkable drummer/leader. Even with the presence of "Norwegian Wood" and "The Beat Goes On" (the latter features Rich's teenage daughter Cathe on a vocal), this is very much a swinging set. Rich has some outstanding solos and lots of drum breaks but does not hog the spotlight; he was justifiably proud of his band. ~ Scott Yanow

Mercy, Mercy songs
$9.55 Principally recorded live at the Tropicana Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada from March 30-April 1, 1970. Originally released on Liberty (11006). Includes liner notes by Paul Werth.
The inclusion of the Paul Simon title cut (which is pretty catchy) and an 11-minute, four-song "Midnight Cowboy Medley" may make one think that this is a fairly commercial Buddy Rich big-band disc. But the arrangements are by Bill Holman, Don Piestrup and Roger Neumann; the other songs are originals by the trio, and among the soloists are altoists Richie ...
