| | Jimmy Smith Crazy Baby CD Jimmy Smith Discography of CDs
It's hard to believe that someone could pull off a groove-based version of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and make it swing like nobody's business. A glance at the track list of CRAZY BABY may induce more eye-rolling, since such dusty groaners as "Makin' Whoopee," "A Night In Tunisia" and "Mack The Knife" crop up, seemingly unlikely candidates for Smith's trademark soulful stretch-outs. But the master organist's particular genius lies in the ability transform even the most improbable of tunes into showcases for his thick, evocative Hammond sound and lightning dexterity.
With cool support from guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey, Smith revamps these tracks with a musical aesthetic that, while rooted firmly in jazz tradition, is unquestionably hip and modern. Standards are cast afresh, and other covers like "When The Lights Are Low" and Sonny Rollins' "Sonnymoon For Two" are infused with equal creative vitality. Containing two previously unissued tracks, this release is a must for collectors and for those unfamiliar with Smith's wizardry.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 4, 1960. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.
Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Quentin Warren (guitar); Donald Bailey (drums).
Producer: Alfred Lion.

Crazy Baby album
$9.79 The concept behind this 1977 McCoy Tyner album is an interesting one: one pianist, two different piano trios. Producer Orrin Keepnews had recently recorded Tyner in a trio setting (1975's "Trident," with Elvin Jones and Ron Carter). Looking for variety, he hit upon the idea of teaming the pianist with two different rhythm sections.
The opening track is Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave." Drummer ...

Crazy Baby songs
$14.39 Imaginary folklore or not, this is a beautiful collaboration between Italian reedman Carlo Actis Dato and Spanish bass player Baldo Martinez. Folklore Imaginario focuses on compositions that mix jazz with a touch of unabashed feeling that can pass as a distillate of traditional music -- something in the simplicity of the melodies, in their immediacy. Martinez's playing has the lightness of touch and the whimsicality required to match Dato's exuberance. And exuberant he is, here as anywhere else. He sticks to the baritone ...
| | Forever, For Always, For Luther, Vol. 2 CD (2006) Digipak
Crazy Baby album
$16.25 The late Luther Vandross went down in history as the most important male vocalist on the romantic side of '80s R&B. Perhaps that isn't saying much when one considers that the '80s, generally speaking, weren't as exciting a decade for R&B as the '50s, '60s, or '70s; regardless, Vandross recorded his share of great soul/urban albums, and his death at the age of 54 on July 1, 2005, was a huge loss for R&B. Produced by Rex Rideout and Bud Harner, Forever, for Always, for Luther, Vol. 2 is a sequel to the Vandross tribute they worked on together in 2004. Many jazz enthusiasts -- including some major proponents of fusion and jazz-funk -- run for cover the minute they hear the term smooth jazz, which is understandable given how many truly dreadful albums ...
