(1 Customer Review)
If there is one thing Grant Green's sound always conveys, it's the blues. On BORN TO BE BLUE Green joins the legendary rhythm players Sonny Clark, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes and the always-spectacular tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec. The date features mostly standards on which Green, Quebec, and Clark delight in tearing up the familiar changes. Quebec particularly shines as he takes as much spotlight as the leader with expertly swinging solos and smoky ballad leads. Green, of course, is in top form, nimbly dancing around his six-string like a featherweight fighter tempting his opponent. Standout tracks include the opening reading of "Someday My Prince Will Come," the unforgettable title tune that features Quebec in one of his most emotive performances, Al Jolson's snappy "Back In Your Own Backyard," and "Cool Blues," one of the few Charlie Parker tunes Green ever recorded.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on December 11, 1961 and March 1, 1962. Includes liner notes by Richard Seidel.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.
Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Ike Quebec (tenor saxophone); Sonny Clark (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
Producer: Alfred Lion.

Born To Be Blue
$9.19 Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
The third of three sessions Grant Green co-led with modal organist Larry Young and Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones, I Want to Hold Your Hand continues in the soft, easy style of its predecessor, Street of Dreams. This time, however -- as one might guess from the title and cover photo -- the flavor is less reflective and more romantic and outwardly engaging. Part of the reason is tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, who takes Bobby Hutcherson's ...
| | Grant Green Matador CD (1964)
Born To Be Blue
$8.85 Grant Green recorded so much high-quality music for Blue Note during the first half of the '60s that a number of excellent sessions went unissued at the time. Even so, it's still hard to figure out why 1964's Matador was only released in Japan in 1979, prior to its U.S. CD reissue in 1990 -- it's a classic and easily one of Green's finest albums. In contrast to the soul-jazz and jazz-funk for which Green is chiefly remembered, Matador is a cool-toned, straight-ahead modal workout that features some of Green's most advanced improvisation, even more so than his sessions with Larry Young. Part of the reason for that is that Green is really pushed ...

| | Yellowman Bad Boy Skanking CD (1982)
Born To Be Blue
$14.75 Although Yellowman's first records exploded on the international reggae scene with all the unexpected force of an IED, of course the DJ's reputation and huge following were already in place in the Jamaican sound systems. There, he often performed with fellow toaster Fathead, and inevitably the producers wanted to capture their magic together on vinyl. While Fathead would never approach the same heights as Yellowman, he definitely had talent, and initially, at least, didn't resent his toasting partner's success, happy to be relegated to a supporting role, and to make great use of the space Yellowman left him to work with. Thus this early album, Bad Boy Skanking, cut in the first year of both men's recording careers, beautifully captures the duo's easygoing relationship, built on familiarity and mutual respect, hinting ...

We wrote this piece, which incorporates elements of gospel, jazz, R&B, and fusion, and we began to reminisce about the incredible mix of musical styles that we grew up with, and how lucky we feel to have come from U City.
