| | Lou Rawls At Last CD Lou Rawls Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Lou Rawls' first album for Blue Note finds him returning to his roots in R&B and jazz after more than a decade spent singing overtly commercial pop. Unsurprisingly, he sounds thoroughly energized by the experience.
Here he pays tribute to old pal Sam Cooke (dueting with Ray Charles on Cooke's gospel tinged "That's Where it's At"), performs a masterful remake of Al Hibbler's "After the Lights Go Down," and gives Etta James's classic version of the title song a genuine run for its money. He also does full justice to two more recent songs, Lyle Lovett's "Good Intentions," and "She's No Lady," which sound like they were written with Rawls' ingratiating baritone in mind. $23.39 Ingmar Bergman has stated that THE MAGIC FLUTE had long since been an inspiration to him by the time he directed this movie version of an actual staging of Mozart's opera. In Emanuel Schikaneder's libretto--performed here in Swedish instead of German--Prince Tamino (Josef Köstlinger) is sent by the mysterious and powerful Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) to rescue her daughter, Pamina (Irma Urrila), from the sorcerer Sarastro (Ulrik Cold), who has kidnapped the girl. ...

| | Minutemen Post-Mersh, Volume 2: Buzz Or Howl Under Influence Of Heat/Project Mersh CD (1987)
At Last CD music
$14.89 Originally issued as 2 separate releases: the BUZZ OR HOWL UNDER INFLUENCE OF HEAT EP and the PROJECT MERSH LP.
The Minutemen came a long way in their all-too-brief career. Initially a hardcore punk outfit, they soon began to carve out a signature sound that incorporated funk rhythms and political lyrics. Their stock in trade was the extremely concise song. On the first few releases, they stayed true to their name, unleashing a flurry of songs that lasted a minute or less. Eventually, they began to explore new directions, adding sonic elements like horns and acoustic guitar, and writing songs of a more traditional length.
This compilation showcases two very different sides of the Minutemen. The 1983 EP BUZZ OR HOWL is a rocking collection that typifies their wildest early work. PROJECT MERSH (1985) is the other side of the coin. Although the group might ...

| | Mark Shane What Would Santa Say? CD (1999) (Import) Germany
At Last CD music
$18.49 Because the repertoire of Christmas songs that musicians are willing to record is usually rather narrow, one often comes to dread or avoid yuletide CDs altogether. But pianist Mark Shane was willing to look beyond the usual list and also use some imagination in putting together his arrangements (along with charts by guitarist James Chirillo) for this release. Starting off with the infrequently heard Louis Prima oldie "What Would Santa Claus Say?" is a welcome change, as this swinger features hot solos by trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, as well as the leader, who also sings in a warm, friendly manner. Shane gets into the campiness of Johnny Mercer's long forgotten "Santa Claus Came in the Spring" and the pseudo-paranoia of the lyric to "'Zat You Santa Claus." James Chirillo's banjo and Shane's music box-like piano help to create an unusual setting for "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," while ...
| | Don Braden New Hang CD (2004)
At Last music CDs
$14.29 Tenor saxophonist Don Braden's 2004 release looks very much back to the 1960s stylewise, even though most of the songs are recent originals. The tenor/trombone front line with Conrad Herwig is a little reminiscent of the Jazz Crusaders, Braden's "No Complaints" sounds similar to the Art Blakey recording of "Blues March," and in general the music falls squarely into the worlds of hard bop and soul-jazz. However, that does not mean that the music is stale or overly predictable. Braden has a big tone and a fluent improvising style, trombonist Herwig is ...
