If you simply can only have one Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers disc (and why would you stop there?), it absolutely must be MOANIN'. This 1958 Blue Note date is the cream of the early Messengers' studio sessions. The group of this period featured the wailing Lee Morgan (trumpet), the swinging Benny Golson (sax) and the soulful Bobby Timmons (piano) with longtime bassist Jymie Merritt by Blakey's side. All of the pieces fell into place here to create one of the most hard-swinging, blues-inflected records in jazz history.
Timmons' classic title cut sets the pace as it's laid-back call-and-response chorus and swinging bridge will get in your soul and start your head bobbing. Golson's bouncing "Are You Real" and the subtle "Along Came Betty" feature that golden Messengers ensemble sound that can't be matched as Blakey drives his men mercilessly. The most dynamic tracks, of course, are the drum feature "The Drum Thunder Suite," a Blakey tour-de-force, and the powerful "Blues March" featuring Art's signature shuffle groove. A delightful reading of the standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine" caps it all off. This is the one to get first.
Recorded in 1968. Includes liner notes by Scott Yanow.

| Moanin' Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Funky BOBBY TIMMONS FOREVER!!!! BEST STUFF EVER!!!! FUNKY!!!! Submitted by najponk (Czech) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 23 of 23 found this helpful.
Facile, Free-Flowing, Masterpiece 5/5... 5/5. Nothing less. Easy rythms and gorgeous. As the titles suggests the inner of the linear isn't shy or far from fact, far from it, these guys are feversihly dab-handed. As for the conclusion, another Ruddy Van Gelder Masterpiece. Re-issue and Remasters are the way for us all to enjoy. I can recommend this title given it wouldn't dissapoint. Submitted by agw5 (Midlands United Kingdom) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A sweet suite, no sweat A classic,
Moanin is to Bluenote what Picasso is to art. Love or hate, but don't ignore..
The title track is a controlled explosion of desire and surprise not bettered across the Bluenote catalogue of music in this style. A superb line up help make this album unmissable and the Drum Thunder (miniature) Suite is literally ground breaking.
When you play is album please consider your neighbours... and think how much they would thank you for a free sample of bliss and crank your volume up up up!

Moanin' album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after ...
| | Cannonball Adderley Somethin' Else CD (1958) Remastered
Moanin' CD music
$8.85 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOMETHIN' ELSE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
The track "Bangoon" is the correct title for the track "Allison's Uncle" that was originally included as a bonus on previous editions of SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun; and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.
Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis' epic ensemble with John Coltrane, resulting ...

$8.85 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MAIDEN VOYAGE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Probably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s, Maiden Voyage finds him in what is basically the Miles Davis band of the time, with Miles replaced by the young Freddie Hubbard. Hancock has always been a fine composer, but Maiden Voyage contains ...

Moanin' album
$14.65 This well-rounded set by veteran bop guitarist George Freeman has plenty of variety. | | Cedar Walton First Set CD (1977) (Import) Germany
Moanin' CD music
$18.29 The set opens with a tougher update of Thelonious Monk's "Off Minor." Here and elsewhere, Billy Higgins' crisp, clearly articulated drumming is the star. He propels the band, supporting Bob Berg's emotive pentatonic sax solo over a one-chord modal vamp. Walton plays against the current, approaching the tune from different stylistic angles. On the ballad "For All We Know," ...

$16.45 ADVANCE PRAISE FOR "CAUSE FOR ALARM":"Cause for Alarm is cause for celebration." - Charlotte Weekly"Guitarist/vocalist Ben Jackson delivers dark, metallic playing...drummer Jason Maner sounds like he studied at the busy feet of Rush's Neil Peart...keyboardist Matt Olin's piano and organ interact fittingly with Jackson's playing and give the songs a theatrical edge. Musically they mesh well, blending influences from complicated prog-rock, jazz and classical to '70s Queen and Zeppelin to rock opera." - Charlotte ObserverRECENT RANKINGS:"One of the Nation's Top 2 Unsigned Bands." - 2005 Zippo Hot Tour"One of the Nation's Top 7 Unsigned Bands." - PureVolume.com"One of the Nation's Top 7 Bands of Most Interest." - Sonicbids.com"The best show in the country." - FUSE / Los Angeles"Charlotte's #1 Favorite Rock Band of 2005." - Creative LoafingRECENT RAVES IN THE PRESS:"The Charlotte trio are obviously pointed on a path to stardom." - Creative Loafing"Amazingly brave and smart. In terms of musicianship, this band cannot be trifled with. Their experience shines through and there are moments where the guitar and piano interplay top anything I could reference - it's just good, organic harmony. They build up simple ideas into rising and falling emotion, curious dynamics and a fat sound for a band with no bassist to speak of. The last track, a sort of live improvisation, is nearly 14 minutes and worth every second. I recommend this band to anyone who wants a flare for the dramatic in their stereo, but still want to remain in the 21st century. The bonus track at the end of the disc (untitled) displays everything they want to do in one song, and it is the climax of the project...solid exploratory playing and a lot of give and take." - Capital City Free Press"Incredible...their music grabs you with the tenacity of a pit bull and doesn't let go." - Away-Team.com"Rock 'n' roll glory...Shadowflag will break out soon." - Charlotte Observer"An incredibly gifted trio of musicians." - CharlotteLiveMusic.com"Rising stars to watch...Shadowflag appears to be a cut above the ...
