The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MAIDEN VOYAGE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano); Herbie Hancock; Ron Carter (bass instrument); Anthony Williams (drums); George Coleman (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Tony Williams (drums). Recording information: New York, NY (03/17/1965). Photographer: Reid Miles. Less overtly adventurous than its predecessor, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage nevertheless finds Herbie Hancock at a creative peak. In fact, it's arguably his finest record of the '60s, reaching a perfect balance between accessible, lyrical jazz and chance-taking hard bop. By this point, the pianist had been with Miles Davis for two years, and it's clear that Miles' subdued yet challenging modal experiments had been fully integrated by Hancock. Not only that, but through Davis, Hancock became part of the exceptional rhythm section of bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, who are both featured on Maiden Voyage, along with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor saxophonist George Coleman. The quintet plays a selection of five Hancock originals, many of which are simply superb showcases for the group's provocative, unpredictable solos, tonal textures, and harmonies. While the quintet takes risks, the music is lovely and accessible, thanks to Hancock's understated, melodic compositions and the tasteful group interplay. All of the elements blend together to make Maiden Voyage a shimmering, beautiful album that captures Hancock at his finest as a leader, soloist, and composer. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Probably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s, Maiden Voyage finds him in what is basically the Miles Davis band of the time, with Miles replaced by the young Freddie Hubbard. Hancock has always been a fine composer, but Maiden Voyage contains two classic compositions in particular - the beautiful `Dolphin Dance', and the atmospheric and popular title track. Saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams play as well throughout as they have ever played, and the whole record is marked with a timeless freshness and sense of creative tension.Q (6/95, p.138) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...this 1965 date is arguably Hancock's finest half-hour of his long career. His compositional strength has never been bettered (four out of five tracks have become classics) and his piano playing is a model of the lucid, cerebral style that continues to act as a role model to young aspirants..." | | Forever Changing: The Golden Age Of Elektra Records 1963-1973: Deluxe Edition CDs (2007)
Maiden Voyage
$170.75 2006 special limited edition 12x12 box spectacular anthology of the best from the Elektra Records label as it evolved from folk to folk-rock music and eventually embraced electric rock-based artists at the core of it's roster. "Forever Changing" was meticulously assembled and great care given to it's contents. This box includes a lavishly illustrated 96 page hardback book, 4 fine art prints of classic Elektra sleeves of The Doors, Judy Collins, Love & Bread, a set of 8 postcards, 4 photo of The Doors, Love, 2 gold enamel logo badges, Tom Rush and Queen, scrapbook style facsimile memorabilia, an illustrated discography and a CD ROM copy of Jac Holzman and Gavan Daws' autobiography and label history "Follow The Music" and a numbered certificate of authentification. The set is a very limited edition, with only 4000 being assembled worldwide!
This five-CD set (which also includes a bonus CD-ROM) is not the biggest, most massive box set that you've ever encountered -- back in the late '90s, Deutsche Grammophon had out something about the size of a cello case (with a pair of handles on it) that contained the label's entire recorded output of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, although, to be fair, that wasn't much more than a hyper-mega-packaging of existing CDs, CD sets, and box sets. This set, on the other hand, is very much an elaborately designed creation, specifically remastered and assembled for this release, and its packaging is custom-conceived from the individual song up through to the outer box. And in the context of popular music, this set is certainly in the running alongside some of Bear Family's most ambitious creations, for sheer size and weight -- (anyone on any kind of heart medication who decides they want this set and doesn't own a car or feel like springing for a taxi should probably order it and have it shipped to their home, rather than buy it at a store and transport it themselves, at least unless they check with their doctor first). Ironically enough, the very fact that this is, indeed, a "popular music" box set says something about the end of Elektra Records' history that is embraced by its contents, Forever Changing: The Golden Age of Elektra 1963-1973, and a limitation in its scope and content -- you won't mind buying it, but you'll heartily wish (and ...

$9.85 PETE WATERS ALSO PERFORMS IN WILD WILLY BARRETTS BARNDANCE BAD BOYS... VISIT www.musiczoo.co.uk FOR DETAILS !!!! Journalist Mary Brosnan writes; The snakes and ladders game of life has softened up singer/songwiter Pete Waters. A rock and roll past usually includes some heavy duty drink and drugs but his journey from bad boy to softie also includes a spell in Borstal, a bit of boxing and a broken neck which laid him up in hospital for months. In his understated way he describes these experiences as "pivotal" Getting married, divorced and bringing up two sons has also gone into a life mix which finds its expression in his music, along with an honours degree in Irish Studies and working and busking his way around Australia and California. He comes from a long line of Irish singers and musicians with the main emphasis being on the singing. His voice perculiarly lends itself on this album to the Irish-style ballad, country music, rock and roll and disco funk. He is by turns mournful, bitter and funny. His songwriting "voice" is probably at its best on Everything I've Learned About You- an edgy reflection on a love affair gone wrong viewed with icy detachment from a safe distance. If there are any top name acts out there looking ...
