The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SONG FOR MY FATHER includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Yet another jazz steal; this time, Steely Dan borrowed the title track for "Rikki Don't Lose That Number." Horace Silver should take heart, this is his most successful album and one that finds its way onto many recommended lists, not just for the jazz fraternity. Its strength is its accessibility, and in keeping with many piano leader albums Silver does not seek to dominate. The reissued CD version contains four extra tracks from the same 1963/4 sessions.
This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder.

If you simply can only have one Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers disc (and why would you stop there?), it absolutely must be MOANIN'. This 1958 Blue Note date is the cream of the early Messengers' studio sessions. The group of this period featured the wailing Lee Morgan (trumpet), the swinging Benny Golson (sax) and the soulful Bobby Timmons (piano) with longtime bassist Jymie Merritt by Blakey's side. All of the pieces fell into place here to create one of the most hard-swinging, blues-inflected records in jazz history.
Timmons' classic title cut sets the pace as it's laid-back call-and-response chorus and swinging bridge will get in your ...

$8.85 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOMETHIN' ELSE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
The track "Bangoon" is the correct title for the track "Allison's Uncle" that was originally included as a bonus on previous editions of SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder.

When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun; and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.
Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles ...

Of all Hank Mobley's classic sessions for Blue Note, the timeless SOUL STATION is by far the most cherished. This 1960 set features a quartet of Mobley and three masters of the rhythm section, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey. What makes this so special, however, is the sheer perfection of it all; Mobley's tenor is soulful and confident, Kelly is at ...

This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
SPEAK NO EVIL is a significant recording for two main reasons. Firstly, it is one of the first in a long string of stunning solo sessions by Shorter that showcase both his masterful saxophone abilities and his eclectic compositional style away from the leadership of Art Blakey and Miles Davis. Secondly, it combines members of the three mightiest ensembles of the period; Freddie Hubbard and Shorter worked together in Blakey's Jazz Messengers, ...

$11.45 Recorded live at the Cliche Lounge, Newark, New Jersey on August 15, 1970. Originally released on Blue Note (84360). Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance and Bob Belden.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kurt Lundvall.
Recorded live in 1970 at the ClichT Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, ALIVE! is Grant Green at his funkiest. Often spurned by critics in his late period for selling out, Green churns out burning riffs and fiery solos on this date, regardless of style. Also making significant contributions to the date are the exceptional organists Neal Creque and Ronnie Foster, saxophonist Claude Bartee, vibraphonist William Bivens, and the irrepressible Idris Muhammad on drums. Whether its raging funk, dreamy Latin, or down-home soul, Green and his men perform with style and flare that is unsurpassed.
Many tracks will be familiar to listeners as the band covers a good many pop songs like Kool & The Gang's "Let The Music Take Your Mind" and the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing." While this may seem unforgivable to some, Green's stunningly expressive renditions of Creque's "Time To Remember" and Herbie Hancock's classic "Maiden Voyage" should dissuade all doubts as to where the music was coming from. Sadly, most tracks are faded out before the club's patrons applauded, but plenty of cheers were captured as individual band introductions were made. Indeed, applause was warranted as Green was still in command of his highly regarded style.
Alive! is the hardest funk LP Grant Green recorded during the later phase of his career, capturing a storming gig at Newark's Cliché Lounge. The sweaty club atmosphere adds something to the music that's difficult to pin down, yet unmistakably present -- a certain organic quality that isn't as noticeable on Green's studio albums of the time. Moreover, Green sounds more like the captain of his ship, with greater assurance in his musical direction and more strut on the R&B material. Drummer Idris Muhammad is a monster in this live setting, and he helps push Green (plus the rest of the band, which includes organist Ronnie Foster) even farther with his kinetic, continually evolving funk rhythms. That's especially true on the swaggering ...
