 "Too marvelous for words"!!
When you have a favorite artist, you often have trouble deciding which of her albums you like the best. Whether it's HEARTS AND MINDS, FROM BROKEN HEARTS TO BLUE SKIES or THE SONGS OF JOHNNY MERCER, Susannah McCorkle's albums (and there's a long list) place her firmly in the league of all-time great vocalists of the past 50 years. With this album (first recorded in 1977, then re-released), you almost get dizzy trying to decide which song is the best. Susannah McCorkle's own favorite from this collection was "Any Place I Hang My Hat is Home" and you can hear why immediately; no other singer in recent music history has been able to lend so much "newness" to collections of standards. There is a bit of mystery in her covers of classic songs because she is able to convey a subtlety in mood and motivation that is awesome. The way she can work a song...."My New Celebrity is You"...the phrasing and timing is a brilliant tease. Two of the songs on here ("Skylark," "Blues in the Night") I'd only heard sung by Dinah Shore and...well...I like Dinah Shore's singing, but Susannah McCorkle's versions are wonderful! I wish I knew all the right musical terms so I could truly do this album justice. some quick asides: "Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In a Hurry" is an adorably fun song. "I'm Old-Fashioned" has a bit of vulnerability nestled in between the wisdom and optimism. It's clichesh to say, but it really does seem that "only the good die young." Susannah McCorkle is missed by her fans.
