By the time they recorded their eponymous debut, heavy metal traditionalists Iced Earth were seasoned veterans, having gradually climbed their way to the surface of a Florida club scene swimming with hundreds of death metal bands. And it shows, for despite a few production kinks, their sound (combining a tremendous Iron Maiden influence with a few thrash metal tricks, namely double kick drums) was almost fully developed. Led by rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer, the group storm their way through a series of galloping anthems filled with guitar harmonies, complex time changes, and admirable musical chops, especially from lead guitarist Randall Shawver. "Written on the Walls," "Colors," "The Funeral," and "When the Night Falls" are only a few of the highlights -- most of which were later re-recorded with new players for 1997's Days of Purgatory compilation. Purists may prefer the raw original versions. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Iced Earth Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews What's with all the fuss about the singer!?!? Ok, I know Gene Adams is not as good as any of Iced Earths other singer's especially Barlow but I don't see what the big deal is. One of my favorite rock/metal songs of all time is on this album (When The Night Falls). Speaking of that track, you people at CD Universe need to fix your information because it's not an instrumental. Anyway, I think Adams is a good singer and I don't have a problem with his voice or amybe I'm just used to that kind of vocal range listening to King Diamond for all these years LOL. If your new to Iced Earth and don't have a problem with high vocal range, then you can start out with this one, if not, then get one of their latest albums. Iced Earth .. OH hells yeah
ICED EARTH rules all!
nuff said! sucks about Barlow though Submitted by Irulenosgoth (alberta,CAN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
First albums...best and fresh ideas. Submitted by claudio_cagnoli (L'Aquila, AQ, Italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awsome guitar from the start People seem to complain about the singer and leave it at that. If you listen past Gene Adams you can hear the increadible guitar work that Jon has worked from the beginning. This remastered version is definately better for that. Don't base your oppinion of IE on this album alone, but dont skip out on it either. Submitted by Mainman (Bozeman, MT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Purchase Iced Earth CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Black Sabbath Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath CD (1973)
Iced Earth album
$8.65 While the title track is the album's best-known song, SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH proved to be another in a long line of 100% filler-free records from Ozzy and co. Highlights included the creepy "Who Are You?," plus the Tony Iommi riff-mongers "A National Acrobat," "Killing Yourself to Live," and "Sabra Cadabra," a song that Metallica would cover on its 1998 release GARAGE INC. You'll also find one of Sabbath's most haunting yet serene instrumentals, "Fluff," as well as the melodic album-closing rocker, "Spiral Architect." SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is quintessential heavy metal.
1974's SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is widely considered to be Black Sabbath's last true classic album. The musical experimentation that began on 1972's VOL. 4 was continued here, but this time it took the form of subtle synthesizer colorings (instead of VOL. 4's tranquil ballads). And whereas its predecessor didn't contain a true, instantly recognizable Sabbath anthem (save for "Snowblind"), SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH's title track resumed the quartet's penchant for penning heavy metal compositions that sounded like they were tailor made for being blasted in a huge arena.
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums).
| | Iced Earth Night Of The Stormrider CD (1992)
Iced Earth CD music
$14.05 Florida's Iced Earth were swimming against the tide in 1992. At a time when alternative rock was wiping the rock & roll slate clean and putting hundreds of heavy metal bands out of business, seemingly overnight, the band's uncompromising blend of classic metaland thrash (think Iron Maiden meets Slayer) was about as unfashionable as it got. And, to make matters worse, their sophomore effort, Night of the Stormrider, was a full-blown concept album about a man's fall from grace and subsequent questioning of organized religion. Guitarist and principal songwriter Jon Shaffer went to great lengths to diversify the band's already complex sonic palette, adding acoustic guitar passages and atmospheric keyboards to outstanding cuts like "Angel's Holocaust," "Before the Vision," "Pure Evil," and the awesome "Desert Rain." New vocalist John Greely has a good set of lungs and usually manages to keep up with the manic pace, but is clearly the weak link in the band's equation and would not return after this album. All in all, Night of the Stormrider was a solid effort which simply arrived at the wrong time, and, after assessing the general public's indifference, Shaffer would place Iced Earth on ice for almost three years. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Iced Earth Burnt Offerings CD (1995)
Iced Earth music CDs
$13.85 After a four-year absence, which, in retrospect, actually spared them from the abuse suffered by most metal bands during the peak years of alternative rock, Iced Earth returned to action with 1995's Burnt Offerings. Known for their uncompromising defense of epic classic metal, the band gets right back to work with the elaborate title track's surprising mix of soft piano tinklings, chorused vocals, double kick drums, and crushing guitars. Remarkably, it all seems to work, and while his ultra-dramatic vocal style occasionally verges on the absurd, resourceful new vocalist Matthew Barlow ultimately carries the day on such standout tracks as "Creator Failure" and "Brainwashed." Then, just when you thought things couldn't get any more grandiose, the band embarks upon the ponderous, 16-minute trilogy (something which would become a tradition for concluding subsequent releases) that is "Dante's Inferno" -- a piece of daunting complexity that will no doubt terrify as many as it delights. Still, classic metal has often been about pomp anyway, and this is what Iced Earth is all about, take it or leave it. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Iced Earth Dark Saga CD (1996)
Iced Earth songs
$13.85 As the cover artwork would suggest, Iced Earth's fourth album, 1996's The Dark Saga, is a concept album based on the popular Todd MacFarlane comic book series Spawn. Though most of the album poses the band in an uncommonly laid-back, non-thrashy mood, the songwriting of leader and guitarist Jon Schaffer is at an all-time inspirational high. In fact the band knocks out both the title track and the excellent "I Died for You" before the furious "Violate" provides the first taste of a double kick drum. Versatile singer Matthew Barlow is impressive throughout but the remarkable interplay between Schaffer and lead guitarist Randall Shawver is the album's true highlight, most notably on the dual harmonies of "The Hunter." Some of the momentum is lost with "The Suffering," a three-song suite that tends to plod along at times, but overall this is a strong album, and one of the band's best. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Iced Earth Something Wicked This Way Comes CD (1998)
Iced Earth album
$14.05 Released in 1998, Something Wicked This Way Comes offers Iced Earth virtually replicating their previous effort, The Dark Saga, but with somewhat less inspired results. "Burning Times," "Stand Alone," and "My Own Savior" are fine slabs of the classic metal/thrash metal combination the band has become known for, but they lack the spark of yesteryear. "1776" is a humdrum instrumental in the Iron Maiden mold, and while "Watching Over Me" and "Consequences" show the band breaking new melodic ground, "Disciples of the Lie" and "Blessed Are You" are two of the few truly memorable songs. Perhaps time limits are the real problem, as the band seems most at home during the extended compositions comprising the "Something Wicked" trilogy which closes the album. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Soilwork Figure Number Five CD (2003)
Iced Earth songs
$13.09 With Figure Number Five, Soilwork continues on the melodic, streamlined path forged on previous platter Natural Born Chaos (which marked a departure from the hectic, At the Gates-style death/thrash of the group's first three releases). Releasing Figure Number Five barely a year after its predecessor, the Swedes apparently struck while the iron was hot, riding the inspired wave of Chaos' songwriting into an even more hook-heavy realm. Immediately noticeable is the conciseness of the songs -- only one surpasses the four-minute mark, the band trimming any unnecessary fat from the arrangements and scoring with several strong, hard jabs and a couple of jaw-busting uppercuts (i.e., "Rejection Role" and "Figure Number Five," the album's most aggressive track that proves Soilwork, despite an increasing emphasis on melody, is still cut from post-death metal cloth), "Light the Torch," and "Brickwalker," although the power ballad (!) "Departure Plan" doesn't quite convince. Vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid sounds more natural transitioning between the thrashy howl of the verses and the clean singing during the choruses, and the neo-prog keyboards mingle well with the carefully constructed riffs, which are compellingly thick and aggressive without being too busy or distracting from the song. Figure Number Five is a thoroughly fresh and exciting record, growing more powerful with each listen, even if death metal purists will bristle at the band's lack of "brutality." Point being, with each successive album, Soilwork is getting even more difficult to categorize, and therefore rising above any genre limitations. (Initial pressings of Figure Number Five came packaged with a bonus CD consisting of six raw, thrash-heavy, and difficult-to-listen-to demo recordings from 1997, which serve to show a seedling of the band's ambition and further illustrate how much the band had progressed over six years.) ~ John Serba

| | Qadeer What Happens In Vegas Stays CD (2004)
Iced Earth CD music
$13.95 Qadeer - What Happens In Vegas Stays! It don't get better than this - a company an artist and an art form that is here to stay!!From a young age, Qadeer (a young man to be reckoned with) gathered his life experiences in a manner that could only take him towards a life of self-expression. His delivery in this release is second to none and he proves it with the contents of this release - What Happens In Vegas Stays! This is a "true" story written into a rhapsody of lyrics. Must hear to understand Qadeer's quest to making a good life for himself and giving all to his fans and listening audience. Every track has a meaning and carries a story of its own - Holiday: This track was the first to be recorded - it was inspired by a young girl who lost her life in a drive-by shooting inside a tough neighborhood; Dear Abby -(a story that speaks about a young girl who is malested by her uncle) is a "smash" and will prove itself - it depicts a life full of unfair situations and shows the sympathy for women in harsh circumstances. Abby - "Absolute for forgiveness" - had to be the lead character in the story. Take a minute to listen to My Ladies - an extreme love story even when not getting it the way you want it - What can we say! - Although Vegas (where Qadeer has made his life) is one of the cities where this release has garnered major success, there is much anticipated worldwide excitement on What Happens In Vegas Stays! This is the first release on Triple P Records - a label that will continue to deliver the "goods".

| | Adriano Celentano Unicamentecelentano CDs (2006) Import; Boxed Set
Iced Earth album
$57.75 While it doesn't pull from every single one of Adriano Celentano's records, Unicamentecelentano still does a very good job of capturing some of the singer's biggest and most important songs, as well as some lesser-known ones, too. Tracing his career from the 1960s through 2006 (pop star Alex Britti even adds his guitar on the track "Oh Diana"), the compilation includes tracks like "Ciao Ragazzi," "Un Albero di Trenta Piani," a live version of "Il Ragazzo della via Gluck," "Il Tuo Bacio è Come un Rock," "La Ballata de Pinocchio," "Stai Lontana da Me," and "Mondo in Mi 7a," all of which show of his soaring tenor, his playfulness, and his distinctively Italian sensibility. More or less listed chronologically, the 42 songs on the three-disc set are a great way for Celentano fans to add to their collections, but an even better way for someone interested in the singer's best work to get acquainted with it. ~ Marisa Brown
"Unicamentecelentano" is a 3-CD compilation by Adriano Celentano, featuring the single "Oh Diana" with Paul Anka. This set also includes a 48-page booklet with pictures of Celentano's private life and career.
