Swedish death metal purists Unleashed were really starting to hit their creative stride with their second and third albums, 1992's Shadows in the Deep and 1993's Across the Open Sea, respectively. Which is why Century Media's combined, one-disc reissue of the pair offers such a cost-effective opportunity for tentative fans wishing to sample both CDs in their entirety. On their own, these albums haven't withstood the test of time as well as the band's next set of releases, 1995's Victory and 1997's Warrior, but there's far more strength in numbers here, and that makes them well worth checking out. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Shadows In The Deep/Across The Open Sea
$12.49 Solo performer: Jason Moran (piano, mini piano). Recorded at Systems Two, New York, New York on April 12, 2002. Includes liner notes by Alicia Hall. Jason Moran's fourth Blue Note album, a highly idiosyncratic solo piano venture, attempts to reconcile a staggeringly diverse set of influences into a cohesive artistic vision. Beginning with stride master James P. Johnson's "You've Got to Be Modernistic," the omnivorous young pianist then takes that title to heart by personalizing everything from Robert Schumann's "Auf Einer Burg" to Muhal Richard Abrams' "Time Into Space Into Time" to Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock." Among the originals are two more chapters in Moran's ongoing "Gangsterism" ...
