Live "Bonded By Blood"Done By Reunion In 1997-Orig.Line-Up
Exodus: Paul Baloff (vocals); Gary Holt, Rick Hunolt (guitar); Jack Gibson (bass); Tom Hunting (drums). Recorded live at the Trocadero, San Francisco, California on March 8, 1997. Recorded during a one-off 1997 reunion show, this vibrant live album featured the near original lineup of thrash metal pioneers Exodus; the only absent parties are original bassist Geoff Andrews and guitarist Kirk Hammet, who was probably tied up at his day job Metallica. Though it was almost certainly tweaked in the studio at a later date, the performance captured on Another Lesson in Violence sounds amazingly live and raw, containing furious renditions of the band's many early classics, screw-ups and all. The band wisely concentrates on material from their landmark debut Bonded By Blood, the only to feature terminally cheesy vocalist Paul Baloff, who incidentally, appears to have matured little in the intermittent 15 years. And in keeping with the spirit of the festivities, the only three tracks culled from their disappointing sophomore album Pleasures of the Flesh were also co-written by Baloff before his dismissal. As an added bonus, the band even resurrects a never recorded early track co-written by Hammet called "Impaler," and surely only a guest appearance from the man himself could have made this timely release more memorable. Probably of little interest to non-fans, Another Lesson in Violence will certainly leave first-generation thrashers giddy with memories past. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

$15.09 The 10-year-anniversary deluxe edition of CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN is a Pavement fan's dream come true. It feature no less than 37 (!) bonus tracks over the course of its two discs. Some are studio outtakes, some are alternate versions, others are rare B-sides, but all hail from the CROOKED RAIN era and underscore the degree to which the band was firing on all cylinders at the time. Pavement: Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar); Scott Kannberg (guitar, background vocals); Mark Ibold (bass guitar); Gary Young, Bob Nastanovich, Steven West (drums). Personnel: Bryce Goggin (piano). Audio Mixer: Bryce Goggin. Photographer: Gail Butensky. Pavement's expanded double-disc 2002 reissue of Slanted & Enchanted -- dubbed Luxe & Reduxe in its deluxe incarnation -- was a landmark for expanded reissues, not just because it was the first time an indie rock band was subjected to such an exhaustive exhumation of the vaults, but because it was excellent in both its execution and material. Peel Sessions, heavily bootlegged live concerts, B-sides, and EPs were collected on a package that raised the bar on reissues of '90s alt-rock classics. Since its release, few have attempted to meet that standard, let alone match it -- Universal's double-disc excavations of Sonic Youth's Dirty and Weezer's first album come close -- but it wasn't until Pavement reissued an expanded edition of their 1994 second album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, on its tenth anniversary that there was another alt-rock reissue as satisfying as Luxe & Reduxe. Subtitled "L.A.'s Desert Origins" -- somewhat of a non sequitur since the album was recorded in New York -- this double-disc set adds 37 bonus tracks to the original 12-track album, rounding up all the stray tracks from 1994, plus a Peel Session from around the time of the album's February release and a whole bunch of previously unreleased material, including the scrapped initial sessions for the album featuring ...

$11.39 A tribute to the King of PopBirthday concert meant to celebrate JacksonBy HOWARD DUKESTribune Staff WriterAnthony Gullens was 12 years old when he started trying to dance like Michael Jackson.AP Photo/Jeff Widener, fileIn this Aug. 25, 1993 file photo, American pop star Michael Jackson performs during his "Dangerous" tour in Bangkok.More photos > In concertT Swang emcees a tribute to Michael Jackson from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Seitz Park, downtown South Bend. Gullens' style fuses R&B, hip-hop, neo-soul and pop. He has released a CD, “We Gets Down,” and is preparing to release another.Gullens says that his musical influences are an eclectic mix, but his inspiration comes from such 1960s-era soul performers as Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Jackie Wilson.Jackson, Gullens says, had one thing in common with those performers.“He was definitely a showman and innovator, and I put those words together because he showed you on that stage how it's supposed to be done,” he says. “You bring your all to the stage. He learned that from (watching) Jackie Wilson and James Brown. When they hit that stage — when Aretha Franklin hit that stage — they didn't play.”Gullens learned that same lesson when he watched Jackson perfect and popularize the dance called “The Moonwalk” on a TV special honoring Motown's 25th Anniversary in 1983.That performance inspired a generation of rappers, rockers, singers and dancers, Gullens says.Over the years, Gullens developed his own style, but Jackson remains his primary musical influence.Gullens says he has been thinking about organizing a Michael Jackson ...
