(4 Customer Reviews)
Contains the full length album BRAVE MURDER DAY plus the bonus EP, FOR THE FUNERALS TO COME.
The first of two Katatonia discs to feature Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth subbing for regular vocalist Jonas Renske, Brave Murder Day is perhaps the most thorough and accomplished first-phase release from the Swedish death/doom outfit. The music is simple, almost trance-like gothic metal topped with Åkerfeldt's signature shouts and growls. Dynamics aren't exactly places at a premium on Brave Murder Day, but quieter moments on tracks like "Day" are a nice touch. These softer spots never really hint at the band's coming genre shift, and unlike later outings, there are no borderline alternative rock moments on Brave Murder Day. This should delight fans of Katatonia's earliest recordings. Consistent and committed to its gloomy theme, this 1997 Century Media offering represents the metallic high-water mark from an ever-evolving group. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| Brave Murder Day/For Funerals To Come Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Interested in Katatonia?...Start here!!!! This is by far their BEST album. Now they are more mellow, but before that, this is who they were. Using the vocal skills of long time friend Mikeal Akerfeldt they present you with so much emotion on one CD that it is hard not to listen to it constantly. The thing about this CD is that it also bring the effort before Brave Murder Day called For Funerals to Come. It is a pretty good EP but does not touch BMD. They used to be a black metal band but their doom metal flavor leaves a much better, longer lasting taste. I definitely think you should get this if you are interested in Katatonia, and if you are a fan what are you doing reading this review? BUY IT ALREADY!!! Interesting album This album, actually a compilation of two EP's, is quite an interesting mix. The first EP, Brave Murder Day is the stronger one - pairing Opeth's Michael Ackerfeldt on two songs with Katatonia's minimalist metal approach. One complaint: Ackerfeldt's powerful vocals are mixed a bit too low to really carry the songs like they should.
Most songs tend to be repetetive, something like trance music for the metal crowd; but the riffs are powerful enough to benefit from such treatment. The second EP is , IMO, less stong. It is not at all bad - it has its high points but never really hits the stride that the first one does.
The album really gets off to a great start, with Brave setting the stage very well. They power right into Murder and Day which plays very well as a suite. Rainroom is also noteable. The rest of the album is a mix of metal, softer instrumentals, and non-melodic instrumental ramblings.
This album would most appeal to fans familiar with Katatonia and Opeth fans will probably like the Brave,Murder,Day trio. However, someone unfamiliar with these two may want to get more acquainted with these two before this album in order to fully appreciate the experimentation happening here. gaby thinks... this is my fav by katatonia, its raw and still doom even though the vocals have changed abit from their previous doom metal, growling sound..this album is pure emotion...and heavy.. Submitted by ggabeee (LA, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
a good cd to have When I bought this I wasn't really sure of what to expect. I know that Katatonias old and new stuff are very different from each other. The old stuff being doom and the new being depressive rock. This cd definately leans toward the doom metal side. The first two songs in my opinion are too similar to be listed on the cd one right after the other, so it tends to drag on. "Day" is a beautiful song and the rest of the cd is pretty good. I don't think that theres anything on this cd that's groundbreaking but it's nice to listen to every so often depending on your mood. Submitted by amanda (georgia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

The question on the minds of most Michael Schenker fans is usually this -- when will he ever finally get his due? Apparently, the German axeman is practically the Rodney Dangerfield of metal. He's somehow managed to anchor two of the most important bands in the lineage of the genre and influence everyone from Metallica to Powerman 5000, and yet, while ...
