Lacuna Coil's debut EP shows the progressive-metal band to have a pretty distinctive sound, with male and female vocals trading off over the group's melancholy, sometimes dark instrumental work. While the group's songwriting could use some more focus, their style marks them as a band with potential. ~ Steve Huey
Recorded from October-November 1997. Lacuna Coil Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) good cd not a bad cd but not a great cd. pick up karmacode or comalies instead. Submitted by pmrguppy (richmond hill, ontario, canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
More questions than answers I just can't put my finger on why I like this album so much. There's no flashy playing here. And Scabbia's vocals, although pleasant and alluring, sound somewhat thin at first listen. I notice after a few more listens, that on track 5 she sings with sparse instrumentation, and it's clear that better production was needed for her voice. By then one notices that the band is playing with a fair amount of emotion, yet seem loose and relaxed, yielding a pleasant, yet brooding heaviness kind of flow to the songs.
Whatever.... I'm intrigued enough to order the other releases, and that's rare for me. Submitted by laserdave (San Antonio, Tejas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Combination of Goth and Metal is pure brilliance. their debut album deserves more than just words on website. It deserves to played on the open air, that is how good this album really is. With songs like Falling, and Soul Into Hades, no one will walk away saying that the band is horrible. They are anything but. Submitted by a reviewer (Tallahassee, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? A GREAT START FOR THE WORLDS GREATEST BAND although i could never rate this EP as highly as any of the Italian stallion's full-length albums, let us just start by saying that at the poorest low-end of the Coils quality they are still always worth five-stars. musically, this is raw and ethereal, brooding without being boring and the closing instrumental is one of the greatest pieces of music you will ever here. the rest of the songs are pure brilliance, simple but charming and you can hear the potential of the group at all times. classic! after this get everything else. if you have everthing else get this. if you don't have lacuna coils complete back catalogue, order it all now! you will never be dissapointed. Lacuna Coil, a must have for your collection Like many other music fans out there i believe the first time you listen to a cd it should be without distraction and while having pure focus on the music. Lacuna Coil by that method did what few bands can... it gave me shivers. The briliant vocals, lyrics and instrumentals almost slacked my jaw. I condsider Lacuna Coil to be a extremely good quality group with the power to command of dark metal but respectful and supporting of peace. while their sound may become more comercial as time goes on the work is still of high standard. A worth while buy at least:)

Lacuna Coil album
$13.85 On its 1999 full-length debut, IN A REVERIE, the Italian goth-metal ensemble Lacuna Coil offers up a melodic yet moody set of songs that prefigures the successful formula of Arkansas's Evanescence by years. While the group features both male and female vocalists, singer Cristina Scabbia often steals the show with her expressive voice, which is equally effective on amped-up, guitar-driven tunes ("My Wings") and orchestral, pop-tinged numbers ("To Myself I Turned"). Although the band would expand its atmospheric sound even further on later releases (most notably, 2002's COMALIES), this album reveals that Lacuna Coil's bold aesthetic was well formed from the beginning.

Lacuna Coil CD music
$12.85 Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. The special-edition release includes the band's Halflife EP as an added bonus. ~ Andy Hinds

| | Lacuna Coil Comalies CD (2002)
Lacuna Coil music CDs
$12.39 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and equally potent "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter," both of which blend neo-classical riffing, swirling synth runs and a perfect juxtaposition of light and heavy vocal phrasing. To commemorate the group's Ozzfest 2004 stint, COMALIES was re-released with a bonus disc featuring nine cuts that include a mix of live and studio acoustic performances, along with videos for "Heaven's a Lie" and "Swamped."
U.S. edition of the Italian goth rock act's third album includes enhanced video track 'The Making of Coma Lies'. Century Media. 2002.

Italy's goth-metal practitioners Lacuna Coil are unique among their heavy-metal brethren. With their sharp songwriting skills and high-minded classical influences, and the evocative vocals of lead singer Christina Scabbia, the band has an undeniably distinctive sound. KARMACODE, Lacuna Coil's 2006 release, is one of their most polished and accomplished efforts.
The band's melodic sensibility, which tends toward the dark and ambient, is at the center of KARMACODE, as is Scabbia's haunting, compelling singing. Moreover, the songs are quite accessible, with a catchiness that belies the group's seemingly anti-mainstream standing. Yet these pretty things adorn a sound that's deeply rooted in the muscle and grind of power metal, creating a sound that is at least as aggressive as it is evocative
Lacuna Coil: Cristina, Andrea (vocals); Maus, Chris (guitar); Marco (bass guitar); Criz (drums, percussion).

| | Savatage Wake Of Magellan CD (1998)
Lacuna Coil music CDs
$8.39 Over 15 years into their career, Savatage refused to stay still -- if anything, the group continued to improve in the '90s, as their 14th album, The Wake of Magellan, proved. Long ago, the group began fusing heavy metal with progressive rock, but they've rarely recorded a concept album as enthralling as The Wake of Magellan. Employing a fictional character, Hector Del-Fuego Magellan, a supposed descendent of famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the band retells two true stories. The first is the tale of the Maersk Dubai, a Taiwanese freight ship whose captain, upon discovering three stowaways on board, decided to throw the offending passengers overboard. The second is the story of journalist Veronica Guerin, who died while combating drug pushers in her home country of Ireland. Magellan relates these two stories -- some of the narrative is enhanced by an epic poem in the liner notes, which was written, along with the lyrics, by producer Paul O'Neill -- over the course of the album. It's an ambitious effort, to say the least, but Savatage's surprisingly graceful music -- not only does it fit the story line, but it has sweeping melodies, intricate arrangements and stunning solos that are compelling on their own terms -- making it a fascinating voyage. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Savatage: Zak Stevens (vocals); Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli (guitar, background vocals); Jon Oliva (keyboards, background vocals); Johnny Lee Middleton (bass, background vocals); Jeff Plate (drums).

Lacuna Coil songs
$19.19 LES NOUVELLES LECTURES COSMOPOLITES is the brainchild of Julien ASH, a French musician who explores different varied and innovating universes, from industrial chaos to elegant neo-classicism. His works evoke Michael NYMAN's style, without forgetting Pascal COMELADE's or Jean-Philippe GOUDE's universes. His creativity is only matched by his diversity. The artist's very prolific discography is characterised by the care taken not to fall in the trap of hermetic aestheticism or dry experiment, to rather concentrate on refined and elaborated melodies. Resisting the will to do it all himself, he regularly invites a lot of guests to give their own contribution. Violin, flute and keyboards parts build often delicate, airy and picturesque pieces with dreamy or nostalgic ambiences. This is a kind of Present classical chamber music which possesses the Past from the Future. First album recorded for the Gazul label, "Le Sanctuaire D'Is" dates back from 1997. Published a year later, "Le Domaine"

| | Body Part Trophy Case Killing Without A Motive CD (2006)
Lacuna Coil CD music
$6.69 Formed in the spring of 2001, this quartet from the South Jersey area has come together to bring audiences their soul music, METAL. There are sounds ranging from death to grind to thrash to speed metal at any given moment in one of their compositions. Their formula for songwriting differs in every piece that they execute. Their new EP, "Killing Without a Motive", gives the listener an opportunity to experience the beginning of what lies ahead for this young group of musicians. The band was founded by members Dan O'Kane (drums) and Mike Barrett(lead vocals/guitar), who had previous playing experience together in other bands. The search for a bass player led them to discover a second guitar player named Chris O'Dowd (vocals/guitar), who they met through other known musicians. After a few months of searching, Mike called upon Jordan DiServio (bass), a member of a previous band they both were in to fulfill the role of bass player. Failed attempts at finding a vocalist and missed opportunities forced Mike into the position of lead vocals. The unrelenting music that has been created and performed by the members generated an overwhelmingly well response from local audiences and listeners, this lead to the decision to remain a four-piece. The name Body Part Trophy Case was developed to emphasize their aggressive attack on the listener's senses and their unrestricted approach to songwriting despite the demand of the nu-metal formula. Their major influences include such artists as Slayer, Carcass, Pantera, Anthrax, Testament, Danzig, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Candiria, Burnt By The Sun, and Suffocation, each of these bands has carved a path in the music industry, allowing acceptance for true metal worldwide. The members of Body Part Trophy Case' soul intent is to deliver their music to audiences in hopes of preserving the entity of metal.

| | Dark At Dawn CD (2006)
Lacuna Coil songs
$9.49 German power metal act Dark at Dawn return with a fifth album that further explores the ideas already covered on the first four, few of which were particularly unique to begin with. Dark at Dawn do have some appealing aspects. In particular, singer Thorsten Kohlrausch's voice is simply so odd, pitched somewhere between the falsetto shrieks of the '80s metal heyday and the glottal grunts of today but not quite of either style, that it becomes strangely fascinating to listen to. Also, drummer/guitarist and primary songwriter Torsten Sauerbrey has a decent ear for dynamics and pacing, best heard on centerpiece track "The Road to Eternity." Overall, however, there is little on Dark at Dawn that couldn't have fit just as easily on any of the band's earlier records, and there's a sense that the group is simply spinning its wheels. As a result, it's unsurprising that Dark at Dawn announced they were splitting up on the eve of this album's delayed U.S. release. ~ Stewart Mason
Dark at Dawn: Thorsten 'Buddy' Kohlrausch (vocals); Torsten Sauerbrey (drums); Michael Lowin (background vocals).
