On Discouraged Ones, Katatonia remains as depressive as ever, while at the time moving even further away from its earlier sound than it did on the previous release, Brave Murder Day. Cleanly sung vocals (at times reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith) have replaced the agonizing growls of Dance of December Souls, while the songs themselves -- averaging about four minutes apiece -- are much more compact than their previous extended epics. The key aspects of the sound here are the thickly layered guitars, which are distorted but somewhat pushed back in the mix, and the huge, reverberating drumbeats, which are almost uniformly played in a slow-to-medium tempo and seem purposely simplistic. These elements cause the songs to sound overly similar on the first few spins; however, with subsequent listens, the melodies begin to peek through the fog, and the album as a whole takes on an almost hypnotic, dreamlike feel, something reinforced by the ever-steady beats. The imagery-laden lyrics (best exemplified by "Saw You Drown") also accentuate this dreamlike quality. Other noteworthy tracks include "Deadhouse," "Cold Ways," and the slowed-down closer, "Distrust," although the whole of this album really exceeds the sum of its parts. Through its subtle melodies, minimal rhythms, and strongly melancholy moods, Discouraged Ones emerges as either a masterpiece, or else something very close. ~ William York

$10.39 The kings of Swedish heavy rock and doom and gloom pop return with perhaps their strongest outing yet. Two years after its last release, Katatonia has issued the most balanced, forward-looking record of the band's career. While Discouraged Ones established a niche for the group in the U.S. and marked a turn from the dark metallic mayhem of earlier records Dance of December Souls and Brave Murder Day, it was 2000's Tonight's Decision and 2001's Last Fair Deal Gone Down that carved out the uniqueness of the band's sound. Here are equal parts dark gothic ...

| | Chelsea CD (1979) (Import) Import; Canada
Discouraged Ones music CDs
$17.39 Although never a first- or even second-string punk band, London's Chelsea lasted through a variety of lineups over a number of years, with growling vocalist Gene October the only constant. 1979's CHELSEA is their first and possibly their best album. Here Chelsea favor a slower, more metal-influenced sound than many of their hyper punk contemporaries, with riff-rockers like "I'm on Fire" and "Fools and Soldiers" sounding more like Mott The Hoople or Slade than the Clash.
Guitarist Tony James, later co-leader of the controversial Sigue Sigue Sputnik, plays in a slashing, riff-oriented style that shows Chelsea's stomping hard rock roots, while the cover of Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross" shows a wider range of influences. This reissue includes four demos of early Chelsea singles, including ...

Discouraged Ones album
$11.39 Passion, energy and good times are words that are synonymous with the Naughtones. This is an original rock band that has a heavy, classic, bluesy sound. They always come to play and play hard! It’s all about the live show for this band. Naughtones has four members three of which are immediate family. They are Brian Naughton (Guitar/Vocals), his Son Corey Naughton (Guitar/Vocals), Brother James Naughton (Bass) and the adopted Pureric(Drums.) All of the Naughtones have years of live, studio and touring experience. In 2006 the Naughtones won a L.A. music Award for Independent Classic Rock Album of the Year for their debut album entitled “From the Nut.” They were also nominated for Best Male Singer/Songwriter for their song called “Around Me.” The first CD has been selling all over the world via online outlets (i.e. Naughtones.com, MySpace, CDBaby, iTunes, Music Net, ect…) and live performances. In 2008 the Naughtones realeased their Sophmore album. The album is a five song EP that is featuring the group in its new state as the best they have ever been. The album is a Self titled EP that has won the L.A. Music Award's 2008 Producers Choice Award for Rock EP of the Year and also was nominated for 2008 Rock album of the Year by the L.A. Music Awards. The band has been playing in L.A. at clubs like Avalon (Palace), the Roxy, the Key Club, the Joint, and the Cat Club since 2005. Touring is on the top of the list of things that the Naughtones want to get into this year so let us know if you want us to come through your town. We want to come rock out a set for you! Personal Biographies Brian Naughton started playing guitar at age 12. His first group was a surf band called the Velaires in 1961. In 1965 he joined a national surf group called the Persuaders. In 1969 Brian formed his own group called Rock Candy. Rock Candy was signed to MGM by a man named Mike Curb. In 1970 he took the opportunity to join the International super group called the Grass Roots. Brian toured and did T.V. shows (American Bandstand, Sunny & Cher, and Kenny Rodgers) with the Grass Roots until 1972. After that he played for a short while with a group called Peanut Butter Conspiracy. PBC had a big hit called “It’s a Happening Thing.” Always in his pursuit of his own original Rock and Roll, Brian left PBC to form a group called Rockit in 1973. By 1976 RSO Records signed the band and renamed them Rockicks. The band was managed by Warren Entner who also managed Quiet Riot. Rockicks shared a rehearsal room with Quiet Riot and also did gigs with them. They played all over the country and locally at places like the Roxy, the Aquarius Theater and Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Rockicks had radio commercials and a lot going for them until a show opening for Blondie at Whiskey ...
