Krisiun is not a band that puts a lot of emphasis on experimenting or on trying to achieve a radically original sound. Instead, they just keep on honing their attack, focusing on making their music even faster and heavier (to the narrow extent that that is possible). Conquerors of Armageddon is their third official album, and it is basically just a bigger and (arguably) better version of what you hear on their first two: Morbid Angel-influenced death metal that overflows with blasting drumbeats, guttural guitar/bass riffs, growled-out vocals, and completely over-the-top guitar solos. For those keeping score, this album may not be quite as fast as Black Force Domain, their official debut, but it's still extremely fast. More importantly, though, the production is the best to date on a Krisiun recording -- it's fuller and more clearly defined than before, although still without being slick -- and the songwriting has also improved -- "Hatred Inherit," "Soul Devourer," and "Iron Stakes" are all expertly constructed songs based around massive riffs, ones that actually do bear a pretty clear Krisiun stamp (something not always true of their earlier work). This band has been pretty consistent as far as their first several albums go, but the improved songwriting and production make Conquerors of Armageddon an especially good introduction to their brand of punishing (if admittedly not all that varied) death metal. ~ William York
Recorded at Stage One Studios, Buehne, Germany between November and December 1999.
Krisiun: Alex Camargo (vocals, bass); Moyses Kolesne (guitar); Max Kolesne (drums).

| | Krisiun Black Force Domain CD (2001)
Conquerors Of Armageddon CD music
$9.65 This Brazilian trio's official full-length debut, Black Force Domain came out in 1995, at a time when the first wave of death metal was in the midst of a lull, both popularly and creatively. While not too widely heard at the time, Black Force did help place Krisiun among a new breed of bands -- Cryptopsy, Nile, and Angelcorpse, among them -- who would, over the next few years, breath some new life into the genre by pursuing new extremes in speed, physical stamina, and overall heaviness. For their part, Krisiun is not so important for being innovative -- ultimately, they're really not -- but instead for their completely over-the-top obsession with speed and brutality. True, the material is heavily influenced by Morbid Angel and Slayer, the riffs aren't especially groundbreaking, and the songs show little variety. However, ...

Conquerors Of Armageddon music CDs
$9.29 Krisiun's second album of obsessively fast extreme death metal offers everything listeners have come to expect from the band: warp-speed drumming, crazed guitar solos, guttural vocals, and relentlessly heavy riffs. Compared to their previous album, Black Force Domain, the production here is better, and there is a little bit more variety in the material (relatively speaking) -- "March of the Black Hordes," an instrumental, actually does follow a marching rhythm for about half of its duration, offering a contrast to the ...

Conquerors Of Armageddon music CDs
$22.05 Limited edition. New live album recorded during the Marduks European tour on September 17, 2005. Includes 17 tracks of uncompromising hate. Packaged in a slipcase with a 16 page booklet. Blood Dawn.
Given how important live concerts are to the black metal experience, one would think that there would be a lot more live albums by black metal artists. But in fact, the majority of black metal bands have not provided live albums. Marduk, thankfully, have provided more than one live album; Warschau is the third live release from these Swedish black metal veterans. Warschau is the German name for the city of Warsaw (in Polish, Warsaw is called Warszawa), and this 74-minute CD was recorded at the venue Proxima in Poland's largest city on September 17, 2005, during a tour of Europe. Marduk have had their share of lineup changes over the years; on Warschau, the 2005 lineup consists of Mortuus, aka Arioch (of Funeral Mist fame) on lead vocals, founder Morgan Håkansson on guitar, Magnus "Devo" Andersson on bass, and Emil Dragutinovic on drums. Some longtime Marduk fans will debate how Mortuus/Arioch's sinister-sounding rasp compares to the sinister-sounding rasp of Legion (who Mortuus/Arioch replaced), but the fact is that Marduk's personnel changes haven't ...

| | Coldseed Comletion Makes The Tragedy CD (2006)
Conquerors Of Armageddon CD music
$9.79 An intriguing album to say the least, Completion Makes the Tragedy is the first effort by Coldseed -- a somewhat supergroup boasting members of Soilwork and Blind Guardian who appear to be on a mission to come up with something very different from their regular pursuits in European power metal and post-death metal. And, to their credit, they've used an incredibly eclectic assortment of styles with which to compose this album's songs, the bulk of which boil down to fusing staccato thrash riffs to blues-based rock licks, traces of goth rock and alt metal, plus a variety of vocal styles ranging from clean singing, to computer processed robot tones, to syncopated, semi-rap retrieved from mostly extinct nu-metal. The latter quality may prove a deal breaker for many fans when faced with the start-stop, jump-da-f**k-up rhythms of "My Affliction," "Low" and the title track, among others -- and not only traditionalists expecting sounds familiar to the musicians' other bands, either. More familiar to them will be "Democracy Lesson," with its far more linear, driving riffs and gothic. synth-backed. melodically sung chorus, "At Last's" uncontained thrashing, and "Reflection," a surprisingly straightforward ballad which stands out like a sore thumb, thanks to its suitably dramatic guitar solo and ...
