With the release of Skeleton Skeletron, Tiamat have effectively crossed over. Whereas early efforts such as Clouds and Wildhoney found the Swedish deathsters taking heavy metal in new and exciting directions by integrating elements of electronica and goth rock, their sixth album begs the question: have they gone too far? With its female backing vocals, lead-off single "Brighter than the Sun" sounds too much like Sisters of Mercy for its own good, while "Dust is our Fare" features a synthesizer intro borrowed straight from Bronski Beat's "Small Town Boy." Sure, both songs are excellent and display a biting guitar tone which not even heavier goth-rock bands like the Sisters or Fields of the Nephilim ever attempted, but the results may still be too extreme even for long-time Tiamat fans. Likewise, they may not be able to stomach the band's dull cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" and other pedestrian offerings, such as "Church of Tiamat" and "Best Friend Money can Buy." Neither song ever really gets off the ground, and both are dominated by the monotonous, breathy baritone delivery of singer Johan Edlund. Not surprisingly, other memorable cuts like "For Her Pleasure" and "As Long As You Are Mine" all possess powerful power chords with synthesizers being used in a supporting role. Overall, Skeleton is still more cohesive and concise a statement than 1997's transitional and oftentimes sprawling A Deeper Kind of Slumber, but metal fans should approach with caution nonetheless ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Skeleton Skeletron album
$21.79 PLAYS LIVE (HIGHLIGHTS) are highlights from 4 different North American concerts between December 1982 and Spring 1983.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
PLAYS LIVE is the sound of a man finally freeing himself definitively from the shackles that had bound him for years. Admittedly those shackles, being front man for Genesis, one of the most fascinating and consistently creative prog-rock bands of the early '70s, were hardly severe. But they were a constraint nonetheless. (How often could Peter take some fan screaming "Suppers Ready" when trying to debut new material?) Finally, with a substantial body of solo material (four albums, three of them titled PETER GABRIEL), Gabriel was ready to put the ghost of Genesis to rest.
And while he did drive a stake through his art-rock past, Gabriel's incendiary stage presence could not be distinguished. Luckily the live set captured here, which draws heavily from the SECURITY album, is consistently first rate and ...
| | Tiamat Astral Sleep CD (1991) Bonus Tracks
Skeleton Skeletron CD music
$8.99 Sweden's Tiamat displayed an incredible learning curve in the year after their debut, resulting in 1991's excellent The Astral Sleep. Short synthesizer instrumentals ("Neon Aeon" and "The Seal") open and close the album, setting the stage for the band's ...
| | Katatonia Discouraged Ones CD (1998)
Skeleton Skeletron music CDs
$9.35 On Discouraged Ones, Katatonia remains as depressive as ever, while at the time moving even further away from its earlier sound than it did on the previous release, Brave Murder Day. Cleanly sung vocals (at times reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith) have replaced the agonizing growls of Dance of December Souls, while the songs themselves -- averaging about four minutes apiece -- are much more compact than their previous extended epics. The key aspects of the sound here are the thickly layered guitars, which are distorted but somewhat pushed back in the mix, and the huge, reverberating drumbeats, which are ...
| | Moonspell Butterfly Effect CD (1999)
Skeleton Skeletron songs
$9.39 Portugal's Moonspell has quickly evolved into one of the major players in the European goth-metal scene, and their fourth album, The Butterfly Effect, finds them pushing the boundaries of metal into strange and exciting new directions. Led by vocalist Fernando Ribeiro's breathy baritone, the group could be likened to a European Type O Negative but with a greater talent for genre-bending experimentation. Following the basic blueprint set by Tiamat's hugely influential Wildhoney album, The Butterfly Effect marries violent, down-tuned guitar riffs, eerie synthesizer passages, and esoteric lyrical themes (part science fiction, part anti-Christianity). And though it's sheer breadth doesn't allow for as cohesive a picture as previous efforts, ...
| | Tiamat Judas Christ CD (2002)
Skeleton Skeletron album
$9.85 Once a black metal band (they're from Sweden) and then a goth metal band when they hit their stride, Tiamat are now just a hokey band singing about love and astrology. And Judas Christ, an attempt at an offensive title (but not a successful one), is an incredibly slow, corny album with lyrics that will make some of their most ardent fans wince. Nobody wants to hear a goth metal band sing about snuggly bunnies, but that doesn't stop Tiamat from rhyming that with "hug me honey" on the hideous ...
