Vision Creation Newsun finds Boredoms moving even further away from the random noise that marked their early output and settling into a loose, jam-oriented aesthetic. The first two tracks (no song titles here, only symbols) find Boredoms further investigating pounding tribal rock with propulsive drumming, energetic guitar work, and vocal chants. The overall feel bears some similarity to Super Ae, with tracks that draw from Krautrock and psychedelia, but Vision Creation Newsun adds a folk element, including softer instrumental textures like hand percussion, lengthy cymbal washes, and acoustic guitars. Some passages even flirt with new age, as they weave bird songs and the sound of falling water into the mix. These delicate touches aptly demonstrate the sonic range of Boredoms, but some of these meandering pieces can get tedious. Still, the highlights are many. Guitarist Yama-Motor is the star here, and most of Vision Creation Newsun's best moments come from his hypnotic style and deep bag of effects. He is equally at home with the Spacemen 3-style feedback shriek of the second track as he is with the minimalist acoustic work that dominates the latter half of the album. The dual percussion of Yoshimi and ATR is also powerful, but when songs break into long drum solos, Boredoms will lose their more punk-oriented fans. This is not the left-field triumph that Super Ae was, but it's a strong album nonetheless. ~ Mark Richardson

The first two British Troggs LPs are combined onto one disc on this 26-track CD, with the addition of historical liner notes. Four of the cuts off From Nowhere, and more than half of Trogglodynamite, never came out in the U.S., and collectors have sometimes wondered why Trogglodynamite in particular was not more heavily represented on compilations or reissues. Now it can be told (and heard): these tracks, off Trogglodynamite in particular, were not very good. From Nowhere was substantially different, and distinctly inferior to, their first American long-player (Wild Thing), although eight of the songs appear on both records. Import only two-disc coupling of his 1981 album 'If I Should Love Again' and his '96 album, Summer of '78. The latter is out-of-print in the US. Barry Manilow decided to follow the success of singing with the big bands with an album saluting another great lost era, The Summer of '78. Even on the newly-written title song, it's never quite clear why Manilow chose to single out the summer of 1978 out of the entire decade after all, the album is comprised of songs written throughout the '70s but the exact reason doesn't matter: as much as its predecessor, this is an exercise in nostalgia, pure and simple. Of course, it's very entertaining nostalgia, as Manilow has chosen soft-rock songs (Dan Hill's 'Sometimes When We Touch', Leo Sayer's 'When I Need You', Bob Seger's 'We've Got Tonight' that perfectly suit his style. The Summer of '78 is a perfectly executed and entertaining slice of nostalgia. BMG. 2006.
This 1998 reissue contains one bonus track not included on the original release.
