RARE MASTERS includes rare singles, previously unreleased material, and the long out-of-print FRIENDS soundtrack.
In addition to the expected b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes, RARE MASTERS is notable for including in its entirely the soundtrack John and Bernie Taupin wrote in the late-'60s for the British movie FRIENDS. The soundtrack songs are early, unpolished John, but among them is the touching buddy song "Friends," (not the Bette Midler-popularized Buzzy Linhart composition) a minor hit in 1971. Among the many surprises elsewhere on RARE MASTERS is "Rock Me When He's Gone," a gospelly number from 1971 whose raw, stripped-down production emphasizes a feeling that the much better-known "Border Song" only hinted at. A nearly 9-minute-long alternate version of "Madman Across The Water" is similarly raw, and highlights its bluesy lead guitar in a way that John rarely did in those early days. You also get John blasting through the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" with John Lennon.
Includes liner notes by Bernie Taupin and Andrew Sandoval.

When Elton Jonh was a good singer I bough the 2CDSet thinking about "Friends" Soundtrack, wich I never saw in CD. But the Collecction is very good. It covers the best period of Elton, when his voice, his lyrics, his arrangements(not so electronic as today) and his harmonies was really beautiful. Today, well, today Elton is not the same he was... Rare Masters album
$11.45 Released in 1964, as Joan Baez was cementing her role as the queen of the folk revival and palling around with Bob Dylan, her imaginatively-titled fifth album was a bigger mainstream commercial success than her earlier releases. Opening with a stately cover of Phil Ochs' excellent "There But For Fortune," the album moves effortlessly from the Leadbelly-style folk-blues of "Stewball" to a graceful version of Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" and beyond. Despite Baez's public persona as the doyenne of protest music, most of these 12 songs are basically apolitical, with only the Ochs cover and the anti-segregationist "Birmingham Sunday" packing much political punch. A version of the Brazilian art-folk song "Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5--Aria" shows a welcome openness in Baez's repertoire as well, and the guitar-and-cello arrangements are engaging but not showy.

Rare Masters music CDs
$15.89 Dave Tate’s latest CD The Final Hour, as this album is even more heart stoppingly beautiful than his previous records, a feat we didn’t think possible. His own unique style (think of a cross between Paul Simon and Jeff Buckley, not just in style but also in quality) hits such a level of perfection that it’s hard to comprehend anything more beautiful." - Heaven Magazine"As far as I’m concerned Tate is the best singer/songwriter around at the moment." - Folk ForumPraise for The Final Hour"The Final Hour once again establishes Dave Tate formidable qualities as a singer/ songwriter so enthusiasts of The Solitude of Here can buy this CD blindly. It calls to mind the same salutary atmosphere that The Solitude had. All words of praise I had for The Solitude can be applied to this CD as well...The entire album exudes a comfortable sense of peace and serenity. The poetic lyrics shouldn’t be subjected to interpretation, which would be no easy task anyway because they’re rather mysterious at times. They have to be felt instead. Dave Tate gives his listener room to do this. He weaves pauses into his compositions by using short breaks or guitar riffs so the listener has time to let everything sink in... mindfulness and intensity go hand in hand... As far as I’m concerned Tate is the best singer/songwriter around at the moment."Grade: 9 out of 10 - Paul Van de Wiel, Folk Forum"I still find it totally inexplicable that two years ago someone like Dave Tate could make such amazing albums as The Solitude of Here, In The Rhythm and Home Is In The Stars, from which such an exceptional talent spoke – as a singer, as a guitar player, as a songwriter, as a producer, as an arranger – and he still couldn’t find a record company interested in releasing any of them. How mistaken all these people were, is evident when we played Dave Tate’s latest CD The Final Hour, as this album is even more heart stoppingly beautiful than his previous records, a feat we didn’t think possible. There didn’t seem to be any way his singing or guitar playing could be improved, and although we thought the same of his songwriting, he succeeds in lifting the basic level another ...
