PJ Harvey: Polly Jean Harvey (vocals, guitar, violin, cello, organ); Robert Ellis (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Vaughan (bass). Producers: Head, PJ Harvey, Robert Ellis, Steve Albini. Engineers include: Head, PJ Harvey, Robert Ellis. Composers: PJ Harvey; Bob Dylan. Personnel: PJ Harvey (vocals, guitar, violin, cello, organ); Rob Ellis (vocals, drums, percussion). Recording information: 12/1992. Unknown Contributor Role: PJ Harvey. Arranger: Rob Ellis. Dry was shockingly frank in its subject and sound, as PJ Harvey delivered post-feminist manifestos with a punkish force. PJ Harvey's second album, Rid of Me, finds the trio, and Harvey in particular, pushing themselves to extremes. This is partially due to producer Steve Albini, who gives the album a bloodless, abrasive edge with his exacting production; each dynamic is pushed to the limit, leaving absolutely no subtleties in the music. Harvey's songs, in decided contrast to Albini's approach, are filled with gray areas and uncertainties, and are considerably more personal than those on Dry. Furthermore, they are lyrically and melodically superior to the songs on the debut, but their merits are obscured by Albini's black-and-white production, which is polarizing. It may be the aural embodiment of the tortured lyrics, and therefore a supremely effective piece of performance art, but it also makes Rid of Me a difficult record to meet halfway. But anyone willing to accept its sonic extremities will find Rid of Me to be a record of unusual power and purpose, one with few peers in its unsettling emotional honesty. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Slicker in production and tighter as a band, RID OF ME finds PJ Harvey's dynamic blend of siren sing-song and leering guitar groomed and ready for show. As a band, their evolution into an empathetic unit rather than mere accompaniment is obvious in their tight yet subtle arrangements. Recorded by Steve Albini, this forceful sophomore effort veers from hoarsely quiet to ferociously looming in one beat. Drummer Robert Ellis and bassist Robert Vaughn's precise rhythm pocket and Ellis' background vocals spill over with a confidence that was lacking on DRY, and the band's grasp of the material is envious. RID OF ME'S songs further examine Harvey's love for farce (in particular, "Me-Jane" and "50 Ft. Queenie"), and rework the accusatory mysticism of DRY ("Snake" and "Man-Size Sextet"). "Man-Size" offers the lyrical stab, "I'll calculate my birth right," while "Me-Jane" hurls insults at an unresponsive Tarzan. With a quick nod to Bob Dylan on "Highway 61 Revisited," Harvey sheds a glimpse on her lyrical influences and strong taste for innuendo. RID OF ME proves PJ Harvey and her band to be a consistent and driving force in the face of 1990s rock.Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.53) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's." Not enough people listen to PJ or seem to even know about her. This CD sounds like Alt/punk. Lyrically, it reads much more gracefully than most alternative music I've come across. Sonically, it will scare you, surprise you, astound you, and leave you craving more. PJ is very talented and gifted. Check her out! Why are there no reviews of this? Before Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, or Vanessa Carlton, there was PJ Harvey. Why can't women make music like this anymore. This is a classic that can be enjoyed by either sex. Steve Albini's production captures the raw, stripped-down sound which compliments PJ's lyrics. "Rid of Me" is one of the best songs ever; other highlights include "Missed" and "Dry." Also a cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." Rid Of Me
$6.39 4-TRACK DEMOS contains eight songs from RID OF ME and six previously unreleased songs all in demo form. Personnel: PJ Harvey (vocals). Since Steve Albini gave Rid of Me such an uncompromisingly noisy finish, it may have made sense for Polly Harvey to release her original demos, augmented by several unreleased songs, six months later as an album. After all, the initial British pressings of Dry came with a bonus disc of her demos. Still, the official, independent release of 4-Track Demos suggests that Harvey wanted to give these songs another chance for listeners who found Rid of Me too abrasive. Even for those who enjoyed Rid of Me, 4-Track Demos is a revelatory experience, since it arguably captures the raw emotion of the songs better the official record. A handful of songs from the record aren't repeated in demo form -- namely "Missed," "Man-Size," "Highway 61 Revisited," ...

Rid Of Me
$9.09 Personnel: Jello Biafra, Daniel Barnes (vocals). Recording information: Sugar Mountain, Oakland (2005-2006). Oakland punks the Fleshies have been launching great gobs of sound at an unsuspecting public since 1999, achieving undreamed of levels of success after releasing an EP in 2002 on Green Day star Billie Joe Armstrong's Adeline label. That they haven't let fame go to their heads is evidenced on this chaotic 2006 release, which combines tales of digestive anarchy like "The Disadvantages of a High Fiber Diet" with the schlock horror sound effects of "Half Werewolf, Half Vampire" and a cover of Sparks' "Happy Hunting Ground," the latter featuring the guest vocals of punk legend Jello Biafra. They're back -- finally! Oakland, California's Fleshies are that thing that lurks there somewhere in your memory of what punk rock used to be about. Since the beginning in 1999 they have been tearing up clubs, basements, outdoor BBQ's and anywhere else they play. Scrape the Walls is their third full-length for Alternative Tentacles (not counting the Gung Ho disc which is a comp of singles and rare tracks) and their first full-length since the brilliant Sicilian in 2003. While the back of the CD booklet features the band all dressed as elves from hell and is entirely off-putting -- and perhaps even nauseating -- the music is anything but. The songs are short, blazing, raucous guitar and drum blasts from hell with Johnny No Moniker attempting to scream and sing at the same time. In keeping with their recorded history, the band writes songs that have the humor of the Adolescents, the fury of Halo of Flies, and the sheer punk rock acumen of the early Melvins, and the sheer insane burn-it-down aesthetic of the Blood Brothers, but they sound like none of them. Give a spin to "Saturday Saints," "Gay Holiday," or "Whee!": if the ...
