Dru Hill is a new-jack soul quartet that follows mentor Keith Sweat's lead on its debut album. Paeans to Herculean late-night exploits and calls of soul-cleaning devotion are interspersed over old-fashioned soul licks, delivered with modern R&B technology. At times, as on "Tell Me," the low and high roads to a heart co-mingle in a fashion that would make Prince envious. But Dru Hill seldom reaches the Minneapolitan's funky musical raunch. Instead, Sisqo, Woody, Nokio and Jazz choose to be smooth like butter: all rich harmonies, laid-back finger snaps and synthesized harps.

Muzik (2/97, p.114) - 8 out of 10 - "With swingbeat getting slender and slower, and the beats getting thinner and lower, one wonders whether you should get down on the dancefloor or get between the sheets and tell somebody you need some love & affection....pure bonking music." Dru Hill I remember this album when I was 9 and loved the song Tell Me. This album shows their talent as vocalists and musicians. I am getting this CD for Christmas. This album has sold over a million copies. This CD shows another Jodeci. Submitted by davidogletree (Glenwood, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Excellet Debut This was a remarkably good debut CD from a group who I've since lost all interest in. One day I'll check out some of their later cds to see if the brilliance of this cd was duplicated. Favorites..3,5,7,8,9,10,11,12. After "Tell Me" you need not skip a single song, the cd is that good, particularly 7,8,9, and 10. Submitted by Marcusj_j (Aurora IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Dru Hill album
$8.99 On ALL THAT I AM, Joe offers 12 tracks of slow, smooth R&B stylings, with diverse arrangements and creative performance, all centered around the breathy, earnest voice of Joe Thomas. In addition to his multi-tracked vocal arrangements, Joe also makes substantial keyboard, programming, and production contributions.
Lyrically, the album ranges from the swaggering bravado of "The Love Scene" to the emotional vulnerability of "No One Else Comes Close." Not wanting to fall back on R&B cliches, Joe opts for a fresher metaphor--"I hear he' s got you in lockdown, but I got the master key" ["All The Things (Your Man Won't Do)"]. ALL THAT I AM features some impressive production tricks including the reverse loop intro to "U Shoulda Told Me (U had A Man)," the flanged vocal effects of "Don't Wanna Be A Player" and exotic instrumental samples throughout.

"My Way" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Three years after his debut album, 18 year-old Usher returns with a newly mature, seductively smooth voice, and a palpable sense of self confidence. What remains so appealing about Usher's soulful crooning and sexy whisper, however, is a youthful freshness and vibrancy. This unpretentious approach is felt throughout the album in the simple, clean production, especially on songs like the Babyface-produced ballad "Bedtime," which has lovely background vocals by Shanice Wilson. Funkier, more up-tempo songs include the title track, an R&B-tinged song endearingly lacking the slightest hint of humility: "from this day forth ...
| | LSG Levert Sweat Gill CD (1997)
Dru Hill music CDs
$10.79 Having had staggering success in the R&B world on their own, Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill united their prodigious talents on LEVERT-SWEAT-GILL. Levert has a proven track record, both as a solo artist and with his group Levert. Keith Sweat has made his mark both as a performer and as a producer. Johnny Gill first found stardom at 16 with the legendary New Edition, parlaying that group's success into a stellar solo career.
At home on either side of the mixing desk, they were able to take complete control of the project, as performers, producers and as writers. This is not to say they didn't enlist some fellow superstars to contribute--guest producers include Sean "Puffy" Combs ("You Got Me," which features rap group The Lox) and Jermaine Dupri ("Where Did I Go Wrong"). LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and MC Lyte appear on "Curious," and "All The Times" features the talents of Faith Evans and Missy Elliot, but the lighthearted "Door #1" is all LSG, turning ...
| | K-Ci & JoJo Love Always CD (1997)
Dru Hill songs
$12.95 "All My Life" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best R&B Song.
While this dynamic, Jodeci-originated R&B duo have made their reputation as kings of sensual, even erotic, R&B, leaving no doubt as to the main topic on their collective mind, LOVE ALWAYS finds them pulling back the hedonistic reins a bit. The approach here is much more subtle, and at the same time, more romantic. In sharp contrast to their hardcore days of yore, there's an almost spiritual quality that comes through here, and the music is the richer for it. Naturally, the Hailey Brothers still possess the same authoritative vocal style that made them such an ...
| | Notorious B I G Life After Death CDs (1997)
Dru Hill album
$18.65 LIFE AFTER DEATH was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Hypnotize" was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Mo Money Mo Problems" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
The double-CD LIFE AFTER DEATH arrives in stores, ironically and tragically, less than three weeks after the Notorious B.I.G. was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Biggie Smalls, as he was known, quickly became one of rap's most respected MCs after the 1994 release of his debut album, READY TO DIE. His music sparked the comeback of East Coast hip-hop, while his very being added fire to rap's over-publicized East-West rivalry. For some (see "Playa Hater"), Biggie's success was too much to handle, and he became a primary target in hip-hop's continuing feud. Never feeding into that war on wax, B.I.G. chose to remain silent, until LIFE AFTER DEATH became a reality, and the situation spoke for itself.
Although song titles like "You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You)" eerily mirror the real-life tragedy, the music on LIFE AFTER DEATH serves to bring ...

| | Archie Shepp Body And Soul CD (1991)
Dru Hill CD music
$12.95 This duet date from 1990 demonstrates the deep blues feeling and technical mastery Archie Shepp has on the tenor saxophone. Comprised of four standards -- "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Body and Soul," "Pannonica," and "'Round Midnight" -- this set is one of Shepp's most enjoyable ever. The reasons are myriad, but it is in large part due to the fluid, loping bass of Richard Davis. Recorded in a club in front ...
