Personnel: Legs Diamond (vocals, guitar); Deb Agnolli, Kim Marrow, Alice Cooper (vocals); Steve Jones , Slash (guitar); Mike E. Clark (programming). Audio Mixer: Mike E. Clark . Recording information: Fun House, Detroit, MI. Editor: John Polito. Photographer: Ed Colver. The Insane Clown Posse had a cult following around their hometown of Detroit in the mid-'90s, eventually winning a major-label contract with Jive. Their deal with Jive was short-lived, since Riddle Box didn't do so well. Still, they retained a devoted local following, which led to Hollywood Records signing the group in 1996. Hollywood spent a million dollars on the recording of ICP's label debut, The Great Milenko, which let the group work with name producers and guest artists like Slash. As a result, it was a better record than its predecessors, boasting a tougher sound and some actual hooks, without losing the juvenile vulgarity that pleased their following. So, everything should have worked out -- ICP had a commercial album that would have brought them a big audience, if the marketplace could overlook the fact that the duo was dressed like evil clowns. But things didn't work out as planned. On the day of the release of The Great Milenko, Hollywood pulled the album from the market, claiming that they were unaware of the offensive content of the record. That seems a little unlikely, since a company wouldn't really sink a million dollars into a project being "unaware" of what it was about. Still, the resulting furor meant that the Insane Clown Posse became national figures, and The Great Milenko gained a sort of hip status. It's one of the better albums in ICP's work. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The Insane Clown Posse had a cult following around their hometown of Detroit in the mid-'90s, eventually winning a major-label contract with Jive. Their deal with Jive was short-lived, since Riddle Box bombed on the national market -- after all, not many people are interested in overweight, dreadlocked jackasses in clown makeup, spewing "naughty" lyrics and spraying their audience with cheap soda. Still, they retained a devoted local following, which led to Hollywood Records signing the group in 1996. Still, the resulting furor meant that the Insane Clown Posse -- a group that would never have been famous or infamous -- became national figures, and The Great Milenko had some sort of hip status. And although it is better than the rest of ICP's work, it's a little ridiculous to think that its mixture of heavy metal and gangsta satire is hip in the late '90s, and it's even more ridiculous to think that it is worth listening to, even if it has vulgar lyrics. It's the sort of record you wish they would take off the stereo at excruciating frat parties. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The fact that AliceMelody Maker (12/6/97, p.43) - "It's astute parody, whether caricaturing rip-off evangelical preachers healing disabled people, a radio shock-jock, road-ragers or street-tuff kids getting grounded for not doing their homework....the latest goose-bump-giving [record] in Insane Clown Posse's travelling hip hop circus." Overhyped but good none-the-less Truely a great album. Though some of the songs on this album could have been better. This album sticks out for one reason, it's probably the best produced/mixed album of ICP's. Get it. Submitted by Alex (Oak Harbor, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

I Love This Album. Huge ICP Fan For Life. ok so some people hate them but I don't see why. They are great and hilarious. I like every song on this album but I recommend Great Milenko, Hockus Pockus, Piggy Pie, Halls of Illusion, and What is a Juggalo?. These guys are great because they mix rock and rap together and make it sound great. Don't listen to the people who hate them because this music is great. Definitly buy this album. Audio Mixers: Insane Clown Posse; Mike E. Clark . Recording information: 313 Studios. Ringmaster, the second album from those urban pranksters the Insane Clown Posse, isn't as much a step forward as it is an improvement from their debut, Carnival of Carnage. Not that the group has really gotten any better -- they can barely rap, the beats are clumsy, the hard rock guitars are pandering -- but there is more focus on Ringmaster, which means that the album hits harder and ...
