OREMI was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best World Music Album.
Afro-pop star Angelique Kidjo's last album of the 1990s is her best yet. Titled Oremi, which means "friends," her fifth album is a tour de force with many great collaborations, including hip-hop star Kelly Price ("Open Your Eyes"), Robbie Neville, Cassandra Wilson (the duet "Never Know"), and Branford Marsalis. Oremi is the first CD in a proposed "American" trilogy exploring the connections between African music and R&B. The album begins with a reinterpretation of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," perhaps the best cover of his material ever. Oremi, however, is not simply a stylistic album; higher consciousness and political sentiments are here too, especially with the impassioned plea in "Babalao" to care for the world's youth. This album is Angelique Kidjo's strongest, most inspired one, but her mainstream stylistic choices opened her up to criticism for being too "pop" and not "African" enough. Such comments are truly unfounded. Oremi is sexy, thrilling, and powerful. One of the best albums in the genre. A good place to start for someone beginning to listen to world music. ~ JT Griffith
Singer and songwriter Angelique Kidjo has her feet planted in many worlds on OREMI, and it sounds fantastic. A cosmopolitan hailing from Benin, West Africa, Angelique maneuvers gracefully and transcendently across the African Diaspora and back. Her studio assemblage here is a fine one, in that they help her thread tight seams between "urban" sounds, funk, jazz and the pop of her home region, leading to an outstanding production that sounds as organic as it is diverse.
"Itche Koutche" is robust street-funk that features special guest Branford Marsalis on soprano sax, blowing a lovely batch of sonic bubbles. "Babalao" does more of the same but with a decidedly Deep Forest feel. Jazz chanteuse Cassandra Wilson adds honey to the sage and mellow "Never Know." While no rendition of Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" may ever rip as ferociously as the original, Kidjo's layered vocal overdubs, jumbo-sized bass lines and down-tempo treatment give it loads of attitude and shine all the same. As she coasts back and forth between her native tongue and English, Kidjo dispenses West African proverbial wisdom in a form both resonant and intensely hip, giving OREMI wide appeal.

Star Time
James Brown Star Time CDs  (1991) Box Set

Oremi
CD $41.45  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
STAR TIME includes a 64-page booklet with three essays - brief appreciations by writer Nelson George and Brown's longtime tour manager Alan Leeds and a longer history by 2 of the box's producers - a complete discography and an introduction penned by the Godfather of Soul himself.
Personnel includes: James Brown (vocals, piano, organ); Bobby Byrd (vocals. organ); Phelps "Catfish" Collins (guitar); Maceo Parker (tenor & baritone saxophones); St. Clair Pickney, Pee Wee Ellis, Clifford "Ace King" MacMillian (tenor saxophone); Al "Brisco" Clark (baritone saxophone); Lewis Hamlin (trumpet); William "Bootsy" Collins, Bernard Odum (bass); John "Jabo" Starks, Nat Kendrick (drums).
Producers include: Ralph Bass, Syd Nathan, James Brown, Hal Neely, Afrika Bambaataa.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
When the four-disc Star Time box was released in 1991, James Brown's catalog sorely needed an overhaul; much of it was out of print, and what was available was hardly befitting of his magnitude. Star Time got everything right: it put Brown's hugely influential career into striking perspective, helping to complete his critical renaissance, and the richness of its music set a standard for box sets in general. It was no easy task to balance Brown's lengthy, multi-part funk workouts with the need to include all of his most significant tracks, and the compilers did an excellent job in deciding when and when not to truncate ("Cold Sweat," for example, must be heard in its entirety). There's nothing from Live at the Apollo (which should be experienced start to finish), and his last hurrah on the pop charts, "Living in America," is missing, but these 71 tracks cover all the other high points, and make an eloquent case ...

In 2004 the Beatnuts returned with another album (Milk Me) on another label (Rykodisc), and though they'd long struggled to regain their footing in the commercially disappointing wake of their Loud Records heyday five years earlier, they continued to release first-rate East Coast hip-hop. There's nothing exceptional about Milk Me, granted, but it's another in a line of solid Beatnuts efforts -- sure to please fans, if not overly impress them and win new ones in the process. The two Nuts -- Psycho Les and JuJu -- produce all their own beats, as they often do, and they rap over them in a fairly carefree, insincere manner. A few notable guests show up for the party -- Greg Nice, Akon, Freeway, Rahzel, Roc Raida -- and those guests are featured on the handful of standout ...

The Peacemakers (formerly the Refreshments) are a fiercely independent band from the southwestern U.S. who tour relentlessly and release their music online, and this charting album--their seventh--captures everything that makes their fans proud. The title can be interpreted two very different ways, and the ambiguity represents the kind of easy smarts and party-with-your-body/think-with-your-head vibe that Roger Clyne ...
