Sitting atop the charts in 1975, Elton John and Bernie Taupin recalled their rise to power in Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, their first explicitly conceptual effort since Tumbleweed Connection. It's no coincidence that it's their best album since then, showcasing each at the peak of his power, as John crafts supple, elastic, versatile pop and Taupin's inscrutable wordplay is evocative, even moving. What's best about the record is that it works best of a piece -- although it entered the charts at number one, this only had one huge hit in "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," which sounds even better here, since it tidily fits into the musical and lyrical themes. And although the musical skill on display here is dazzling, as it bounces between country and hard rock within the same song, this is certainly a grower. The album needs time to reveal its treasures, but once it does, it rivals Tumbleweed in terms of sheer consistency and eclipses it in scope, capturing John and Taupin at a pinnacle. They collapsed in hubris and excess not long afterward -- Rock of the Westies, which followed just months later is as scattered as this is focused -- but this remains a testament to the strengths of their creative partnership. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine One of Elton John's many 1970s pop gems, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC & THE DIRT BROWN COWBOY is a classic album filled with well-written, catchy tunes. The most famous song from this record is the radio hit, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight." A bitter tune about a badly entangled relationship, John's lyric rejoices in an 11th-hour triumph of freedom. CAPTAIN FANTASTIC also features John's well-known version of the Lennon/McCartney favorite "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." John maintains the eccentric sonic elements of this tune, but makes it more dramatic and operatic, particularly as the song's refrain loops on and on towards the ending. "Writing" is another highlight on this disc; Latin-influenced, upbeat, and bubbly, this number contains some quirky bongo playing and a light, care-free lyric centered on the actual process of composing songs. Without a doubt, John and partner Bernie Taupin were one of the best songwriting duos in rock history, and many of their finer collaborations are captured on this 1975 release.Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.134) - Ranked #158 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy Music | List Price | $9.95 (You save $3.26) | | Category | Rock Albums, Pop CDs, Oldies, Rock/Pop, Singer/Songwriter | | Label | Rocket | | Orig Year | 1975 | | All Time Sales Rank | 1403 | | CD Universe Part number | 1231619 | | Catalog number | 528160 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | May 14, 1996 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Gus Dudgeon; Greg Penny; Gus Dudgeon | | Engineer | Jeff Guercio; Jeff Guercio | | Personnel | Elton John - vocals, strings, piano, electric piano, harpsichord, Clavinet, Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, ARP synthesizer Ray Cooper - congas, bongos, cymbals, Jew's harp, shaker, tambourine, triangle, percussion, bells, hand bells, gong Nigel Olsson - drums, background vocals Davey Johnstone - vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, piano, synthesizer, background vocals Dee Murray - bass guitar, background vocals David Hentschel - keyboards, synthesizer, ARP synthesizer

Elton John Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy Songs Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy Music Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Sir Captain Elton Fantastic John! Huge! Large! Great material, hats off to Gus again for such a wonderful job remastering this classic work! The bonus tracks really fit in well with this composition, also! Sounds even better than I remember it sounding, obviously the master tape for this recording was preserved quite well! Thanks Davey, Dee, Nigel, Bernie...your contributions to this masterpiece can not go unnoticed! Sorry Elton...these guys were the best...those other clowns you got to back you up on later recordings were not this caliber, and no they don't play too loud! Sadly, this was the last "great" recording Elton ever made! Submitted by mheinen3 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Elton John has a really good album here I have like Elton all my life but I just started really getting into him enough to buy most of his albums.
This album is very good. Great lyrics by Bernie. Most songs on here I liked, the ones I liked, I liked a lot. But, there is some filler tunes on this CD too. Submitted by Scapp70 (New York City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fantastic Chapter Closer The first album ever to debut at #1, "Capt. Fantastic" was perhaps the climaxing point of Elton John's fantastic commercial success of the early 70s. All the tracks here were worthy of airplay, although a few did tend to grate after repeated listenings. Unfortunately, the album also classifies as John's last true artistic statement as the fever-pitched roller coaster ride of the previous five years began to take its toll. (Remember, back then, recording artists were contracted to deliver 2 albums of original material a year). Even though I did like the follow-up "Rock of the Westies", that disc seemed to be missing that "special something" that was inherent in John's earlier works. Overall, a great album, but sadly the beginning of the end of a significant era not only in EJ's career, but in pop music as well. Submitted by Will-T (Lawrenceburg IN) Was This Review Helpful? One of the Best of All Time Easily one of the best albums of all time. You're right, you are one of the lucky ones to get the vinyl copies. I am relegated to the "digital remaster". If you listened to any of these songs on their own, they would just be really good. When you listen to the compilation, they are just great. Unlike most, who's favorite song is someone saved my life tonight, my favorite song (which happens to be my favorite song, period) is the title song. It is just amazing. Hope you get this album and enjoy it too. Like Elton John or not, if you like music, you will like this record, I mean, CD.
