MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER produced only a couple of minor hits, which may have something to do with the fact that its best songs are all five or six minutes long. But they're among the strongest songs in the entire Elton John catalog--especially the lovely opening track, "Tiny Dancer," which builds from a light, delicately melodic verse to a sweeping, dramatic chorus. Another highlight is the inscrutably biographic "Levon," whose title character was born "on a Christmas day when the New York Times said God is dead."
John's luxurious piano melodies, Bernie Taupin's poetic lyrics, and Paul Buckmaster's lush string arrangements all stretch out on MADMAN, giving the record a grandiose, sweeping feel when it is not riding dark, surging currents, as on the memorably edgy title track. There is a painstaking, interior quality here that goes missing from John's early pop-song oriented albums and from the later excesses of GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. For this reason, MADMAN ON THE WATER is a crucial, unique addition to the John catalogue.

Elton John Madman Across The Water Songs Madman Across The Water Music Madman Across The Water Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Numero Uno! This is Elton's best. In my opinion there are five essential Elton cd's, they are; 1. Madman Across the Water, 1A. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, 1B. Tumbleweed Connection, 1C. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and 1D. Honky Chateau! His other works have their moments, but none are the complete works as these five are! Madman is just a masterpiece from start to finish! Not a single song on the entire cd that's filler material! Tumbleweed Connection is the only one that comes close in that regard. Keep in mind that Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was a double LP, and all double LP's have some filler. Well...Roy Rogers...Jamaica Jerkoff...Bennie and the Jets...you get the picture! Can't go wrong with these five, though! Submitted by mheinen3 (Oklahoma City, OK, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Masterpiece! Elton John and Bernie Taupin very close to Lennon & McCartney - difficult to believe that so many great great recordings were to follow this amazing work. Elton & Bernie have one major problem...think they made it all look far too easy.
They are so completely underrated... Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Prog Rock Elton Style Filled with great piano and strings, this is certainly one of his best. The best song here is "Tiny Dancer," a song which is played more often on oldies and classic rock stations now than it was then, its low-ish chart success being surprising in retrospect. The same is true for Levon. Levon and Holiday Inn are the next best tracks on the album, although there are no weak songs. It's downfall, if you can call it that, is the ever present strings. The highlights are the piano and the guitar whenever you can actually hear them. OVERALL: 4.5 out of 5 Submitted by Ian (Kenosha County, WI, US) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Madman Across The Water
$10.39 Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; ...

Madman Across The Water
$6.49 Recorded in the charmed period between the initial success of ELTON JOHN and superstar extravaganzas like GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION, a loose concept album about the American West, was a strange, sideways move for Elton John and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. A album in the traditional sense, it is best heard as a piece, with songs that pick up and expand on each other's moods and settings. Notice, for example, the progression of characters from the young fighter waving "My Father's Gun," to the retired and forgotten "Talking Old Soldiers," to the protagonist of "Where ...

Madman Across The Water
$15.65 Even the most casual of rap fans will likely remember Scarface as one third of the Geto Boys, the Houston act who stirred up national controversy with the dark, graphic classic WE CAN'T BE STOPPED. However, the scope of his influence can easily be underestimated; more than just a part of a scene, he made a mark on wave after wave of Southern-fried platinum-selling movements from the No Limit Posse to the Screwed Up Klick (he even brought Ludacris to Def Jam). And that doesn't even touch on his prolific, respected career as a solo artist.
With BALLS AND MY WORLD, Scarface offers his trademark deliberate bass-heavy sound and uncompromising, scathing, raw lyrics. He has always been about as subtle as an anvil, and he outdoes himself on "Bitch Nigga," a thinly-veiled attack on 50 Cent that goes so far as to simulate the omnipresent beat of the Queens rapper's No. 1 crossover pop hit "In Da Club." Scarace somehow manages to put a new spin on the topic of money-seeking women on "Only Your Mother." However, the most remarkable track here is "Make Your Peace" which conjures up the creepiest, most alluring elements of the Geto Boys with its odd juxtaposition of positive message and spirituality with a spooky, other-side-of-the-grave delivery.
Though nothing on the packaging states so, Balls and My Word is Rap-a-Lot's attempt to spruce up a bunch of Scarface outtakes and make them seem like a new studio album by a departed and increasingly popular legend. ...
